March 15, 1959 Hoping Nobel is Better, Seeing Granny Every Other Day, Expecting Snow and Reading Dr. Zhivago

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"I was glad to have the card and sure hope Nobel is home by now.  It seems years since I had a letter from you, Mother.  I know you both are very tired but I hope you aren't sick.

Bob & Ann both have colds but haven't missed any school.  There has been a mild epidemic of colds and bronchitis in school and lots of kids have been out.

Granny Watterson is so much better that I've been going to see her every other day instead of every day.  She tells me to stay home and get my work done but doesn't stop talking a minute while I'm there.  She is always so glad to see me.  She'll be in the hospital for awhile yet because they can't take care of her at home.  Toni simply couldn't lift her & wait on her.

My suit is about 2/3 done and Ann's dress is about half done.  I can finish the dress in one more day.

I hope to get my hair fixed tomorrow if I can get into the shop.  My hair is so long that none of my hats look right.

We've had two wonderful spring days but the temperature is dropping & we expect snow tomorrow.

Ann has a recital in the morning and goes to a birthday party in the afternoon.  B leaves for Kansas City early Sunday morning.  He is driving a school car so I'll have ours.  Two other men are going with him and he will meet Jim Wheeler in K.C.  They have a hotel room reserved together.  This is the philosophy meeting they always attend.  B hopes to go out to see Granny Gibson.  She will be 96 on the 25th.  I wish we could all go see her.

I've been reading Dr. Zhivago, but it is so complicated that it reads very slowly.  I started it once and then had to re-read the first part again to get sense out of it.  It may be that I'm not far enough into the story yet.

B has gone to a meeting & the kids are watching T.V.  There isn't much to write so I'll say bye and hope to hear from you soon."

                        Lots of love,

                              Bonnie

NOTE:  Many readers undoubtedly remember reading Dr. Zhivago or seeing the movie in 1965.  Though loosely based on the book, the film enjoyed immense popularity.  For some information about Pasternak:  http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/bday/0210.html

  3. Ann I just had to tell you that Dr Zhivago is on TV this afternoon (Sunday 17th November). The TV stations here often replay movies from 'the good old days' on Sunday afternoons. I still enjoy them. I have 2 all time favs which are 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and the one I love the most is 'Gone With The Wind'. They really don't make movies like that any more. Bob likes the guy stuff like "Ice Station Zebra' or 'The Guns of Navarone' or any John Wayne movies.

  4. Sounds like a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Those were all terrific movies but I'm not familiar with Ice Station Zebra so I looked it up. Hadn't seen that one!
