August 3, 1958 It's Raining Again, The Willow is Leafing and The Tomatoes Are High
Dear Mother & Daddy,
"Well, it's raining again after a rather nice day. It has rained almost every night this week but the days have been pretty nice. This has been a wonderful summer, though, in spite of all the rain. It hasn't been really hot yet.
Bob's willow is leafing out. I was afraid it would never come out after it was so slow and the stems seemed to be so dry. The daisy is getting buds again so I guess it will be blooming again soon. The petunias all died and I can't tell about the other wild flowers.
Mrs. Smith (my iris friend) brought me a lot of vegetables this week but I wish we had some of your tomatoes. They are still too high to buy and no one seems to have any ripe ones in their gardens.
I had a nice letter from Beulah. She said you and Buddy had been out and they had started to your house Sunday when Nobel's folks drove up.
The children had their last day of summer school today and I'm glad they are through for awhile. B goes back to work Monday and we dread having to get up early & living by the clock again. B has been working on the T.V. antenna today. After we moved the set he had to fix it over.
I've been sewing this week. B's folks gave me dress material for my birthday last year and I've been making that up. It's a dark cotton and will be nice for school or town. It's all done but the hem and I hope to do that tonight.
I made Ann a dress off that pattern I bought in Lebanon & had an awful time with it. It was so big it looked awful so I'll have to wait awhile before using that pattern again.
Ann is having a picnic tonight with the neighbors. They had planned to go to the lake but the rain sent them to the back porch.
Hope you both are fine."
Lots of love,
Bonnie
NOTE: This is the 807th letter posted thus far, and the first one requiring 4¢ postage. The rate increase occurred on Aug. 1, 1958. Postage for a first class letter had been 3¢ since 1932. The next increase didn't occur until 1963.
I found the recipe below, and can't in my wildest dreams imagine lime Jello with tuna and cottage cheese. If any reader has tried it, let me know! The recipe is from the Saturday Evening Post, August 9, 1958.
