July 28, 1958 A Trip to Mammoth Cave, A Lot of Running Around and Working Over the Slip Cover

The Onyx Chamber in Mammoth Cave (postcard 1958)
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"The suitcase is unpacked and we're about back to normal now except for being a little tired.  We did have a real nice trip and all of us enjoyed it.  We left soon after lunch Friday and drove a circle of over 900 miles.  Most of Saturday was spent at Mammoth Cave.  It is a national park and is a fine place.   There were several tours into different parts of the cave and no one is allowed into any cave without a guide.  Even the natural entrance is fenced off but anyone could get lost in a hurry.

1st row left Ann, Bobby, B; 2nd row 4th from left, Bonnie

The Drapery Room
After we left the park we drove to Hodgenville, Kentucky to see the cabin where Lincoln was  born.  That is a beautiful place too and a national park but we got there a few minutes before closing time so didn't get to spend much time.  We did see the cabin, the spring where the Lincolns got their water and the big oak tree that was there when Lincoln was born.

The Ohio River was really rolling.  It had gone down a lot but it was still way out of its banks.  There were fields with big ponds of water still in them and you could see where water had been over so many crops.

We ran thru a storm last night but didn't see any damage.  There were lots of limbs off trees here in Normal when we got home and parts of Bloomington had no power.

Pretzel stayed with some friends of ours but was glad to see us when we got back.

It seems like we've done a lot of running around since we saw you.  We went to Peoria one afternoon and got a pair of chairs for the living room.  They are real pale gold Kreohler easy chairs.  They were very nice and on sale so we didn't have to use all of our picture check.  The living room sure looks better.

I forgot to tell you that we got the desk chair covered with the piece of material you gave me.  We did it right after we came home and it looks nice.  I also got the old couch slip covered.  The cover didn't fit when it came but I worked it over a little and it does all right.

Ann is fine now but we did keep her out of school a week.  She went the Monday morning after we got home from Mo. but looked so bad at noon that I took her to the Dr.  She had a fever and had to have a shot plus 2 bottles of medicine before we got the infection killed.  We all are fine now.  Hope you are too."

                                Lots of love,

                                          Bonnie
