May 12, 1951 Hot and Cold, Painted or Papered, A Girl or A Boy and Trim It or Cut It

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It is really bedtime but it is so hard to get a letter written in the daytime.  Bobby and Ann both have colds so they will be cross tomorrow.  Ann has had hers for two or three days but Bobby's started this afternoon.  The weather has been crazy--hot one day and cold the next.  We have a furnace fire though, so are warm.

I had a letter from Beulah this week and was so glad to get it.  She wants the cushions as I hoped she would.  We will send them to you since they don't get their mail everyday and the cushions might get wet.  We'll get them wrapped one of these days before we move.  We are still planning to move about June1st.  We went over to look through the house last Sunday and it is so nice.  The couple there are both like old maids so they have kept things painted up.  It is a nice place and I can't wait to get over there.  It should be easier to keep clean than this place.  One room has to be painted or papered.  It will be our bedroom and hasn't been papered in several years.  They have kept students in it so haven't done anything to it.  We will probably paint since that will be quicker and easier.

No, we hadn't heard about Mary Lou's baby and you told it in such a way that we don't know whether it's a girl or boy.

You sort of splurged in Springfield, didn't you?  Now you should be able to drive up to see us.

We still haven't bought our stove.  We have looked at a lot of them but they are so high.  We have about decided on a Sears that they have in the store here.

Yes, B is awfully busy now.  He has two speaking engagements coming up but doesn't mind them since he'll get $15. a piece.  One is for an eighth grade graduation at a little town near here.

I gave Toni a permanent last night.  She called today and said it looked nice.  She is going to cut my hair (or trim it really) next week and then give me a permanent after we move.  If it doesn't look right I'll have to have one before then but hope I can wait since there are so many other things to do.

Berries are getting better and cheaper here.  I use a recipe for preserves that is in the Ball book.  There are several in there.  I've tried them all.  I haven't made but the one batch this spring.

I wish we could be with you on Mother's Day.  Hope it is a nice day.   A little package is on the way."

              Lots of love,

                      Bonnie

NOTE:  Mary Lou (B's niece) had a boy, named after his dad and affectionately known as J.A., on May 8, 1951.   Tragically, J.A. lost his life in a car accident on June 13, 1967.
