November 13, 1948 Penny Disappeared, Teeth Disappeared, Petaldown and Holiday Chiffon Pumpkin Pie

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It won't be long now till we'll be coming home.  Bobby probably won't remember any of you and he is a little afraid of new people now.  We plan to stay with you if all goes as we hope.  Bobby is playing on the floor.  He's so sleepy he can hardly hold his eyes open but won't stay in the crib.  Since his shot he's been waking several times in the night and gets up anywhere from 5:00 on.  His nose has been running but I don't know whether it's a cold or the shot.   He's still been pretty good.  The smallpox vaccination won't be given till spring.

Penny has disappeared.  B put her out for a few minutes yesterday afternoon.  He was holding Bobby and turned around for me to take him.  Penny was gone when he went back out.  She has been out lots of times and never ran off so we are sure someone took her.  If she doesn't come home today we're going to advertise but it probably won't do any good.

We had to send Bobby's snowsuit back and order another one.  It just didn't fit.

We have had only a few flakes of snow but I didn't see them and we sure have had rain and it stays so dark and gloomy.

Tell Charlotte I'll bring her a birthday present when we come and I'll try to send the overall pattern.  I supposed Jerry was too big for it and I'm through with it now.

Beulah and Charlotte

Who pulled your teeth?  Did you have x-rays taken first?  I hope your gums are healed by now and you feel better.

I have a new piece of petaldown for a dress.  The cotton ones look so messy after Bobby walks on me a few minutes.  Maybe this one will look neater in the afternoon when we walk.

Take care of yourselves and we'll see you before too long."

                     Lots of love,

                            B, Bonnie & Bobby

Holiday Pumpkin Chiffon Pie  (From Woman's Day,  November, 1948)

Mix 1-1/2 c. fine gingersnap crumbs with 1/3 c. melted margarine.  Pat evenly into a deep 9" pie pan, bringing mixture up to the rim.  Bake 10 min. at 325; cool.  Beat 3 egg yolks slightly and add 1/2 c. sugar, 1-1/4 c. mashed pumpkin, 1/3 c. milk, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. ginger, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg and 1/4 tsp. cinnamon.  Cook in top part of double boiler over boiling water until thickened, about 10 min., stirring constantly.  Soften 1 envelope plain gelatin in 1/4 c. cold water; add to hot pumpkin mixture; mix well and chill.  When beginning to set, add 2 T rum, 2 T chopped candied fruit and 2 T chopped nuts.  Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry; gradually beat in remaining 1/2 c. sugar; fold into pumpkin mixture.  Pour into pie shell and chill until set.

  1. What sweet photos. I always love seeing moms and their bundles of joy together, no matter the era. That recipe sounds scrumptious. Pumpkin is one of favourite foods, so I'll definitely have to tuck this recipe away for when autumn arrives.

Thank you very much for your lovely comment on my vintage outfit post today, dear Ann. I'm working on building up a rainbow of gloves, as I wear them all the time and really enjoy the pop of colour and elegance they bring to most any outfit. How sweet to know you would have liked to have worn those ones to prom - me too! :)

    Oodles of hugs,
    ♥ Jessica
