Dear Mother & Daddy,
"How are you both? We are fine but are getting awfully tired of staying in the house. It has done nothing but rain and it is too cold to open the windows.
I started this over an hour ago but Bobby woke for his bath so I had to stop. He has learned that he can squeal real loud and has almost run us out with his yelling. I've just put him in bed for his long nap and he's been talking to himself but is getting quiet so he'll probably soon be asleep. He sleeps till 6:30 or 7:00 every morning and then plays till about 8:30 when he has a short nap before his bath. After he eats at 10:00 he will sleep again till about 1 or 1:30 and then is awake the whole afternoon. Everything goes in his mouth now and he especially likes his feet.
How is Grandma? I wrote her a short letter and sent some pictures. I hope she won't be down all summer.
We didn't have any letters from home today but will probably get them Monday. I am sending Jerry a sun suit for his birthday but after I got it home I'm wondering if it will be big enough. I just can't picture how big he should be.
No, we still can't tell much about Bobby's hair. It is only about 1/2 inch long but is beginning to grow. There are only a few hairs of his baby hair left and they look so funny for they are about 1-1/2" long. I can't even decide about the color. One day it looks blond and the next red.
We think we'll start home the last week of June and plan to go by Normal for a couple days so we can look for a place to live. We won't pack anything till we get back for we won't know whether we'll want to move everything until we see what kind of place we can find. If it should be furnished we'd take only the choice pieces. Nothing is settled yet. I may bring a few things home to leave with you--my plants and maybe my good dishes. I don't much trust a mover with my dishes. Unless something happens we'll all make the trip twice. Six weeks is too long to be separated.
We're expecting company tomorrow from New Haven--our friend we knew at Yale. He won't be here for dinner but we plan to have a little supper.
Hope to hear from you soon."
Lots of love,
B, Bonnie & Bobby
NOTE from Ann: On May 22, 1948, a young cancer patient is visited by his favorite baseball players compliments of the Truth or Consequences radio program. This was before the days of agencies such as the Make a Wish Foundation or Dream Factory, but this event was quite similar to the stories we hear today.
