November 10, 1951 The Real Snow Storm, The Name Drawing, The Suit, The Glasses and Looking for a Few Good Cookies

Bonnie's 198 cookie recipes

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"We have been snowed in most of the week with about a foot of snow.  Our driveway was deeper than that for it drifted a lot.  There was a lot of wind with the snow and it was a real storm.  The kids all loved it, though, and Bobby would stay out as long as he could stand it.  We have ordered Ann some boots and they haven't come yet so she hasn't been out much except in the stroller after the walks were all shoveled.  She didn't like staying in much either.  B got our car out for the first time in almost a week.  It took some shoveling but he didn't have any trouble.

Wheelers are still homesick for Normal although they like it very much in Alabama.   Eve said they were having a cold snap.  It was down to 50.  They really would hate the weather we're having now.

You tell Beulah that we are going to stick to the name drawing business about Christmas and for her to, too.  It is going to seem awfully queer not getting her a Christmas present but I guess we'll have to do it this way this time.  Ruth's name should be in it, too.  What should we do about that?

My suit is coming along fine.  It shouldn't take much longer to finish it and I'm thinking about making a rayon suit but haven't bought material yet.

B got his glasses today and we are so pleased with them.  The frames are plastic--almost the color of his skin.  He says he can see some better with them.  This is the first time they have been changed in over 10 years.  One lens is very thick but it doesn't show unless you examine them.  Maybe they can so something for you too, when you come.

I wish I had some of that fresh backbone.  I bought a pound of sausage yesterday and was so mad when I cooked it.  I had five little cakes about like a silver dollar and a half skillet of grease.  Every time I buy meat at the Piggly Wiggly I swear it will be the last.  A&P meat is never like that.

I'll try to get the Good Housekeeping.  I'd like to find some good cookie recipes.  I'm beginning to think about the fruitcake for our Christmas dinner.  If nothing happens I'll bring one home as usual.

It's getting late so bye for now."

                     Lots of love,

                               Bonnie

NOTE:  Bonnie was always baking cookies for one function or another.  She told me that once when Bobby asked her if the warm cookies on the counter were for home, she had to tell him no, and felt so guilty about it that from then on she always baked extras.  She once baked and filled 50 large containers of oatmeal cookies for the fraternity across the street.  Each batch made 12 dozen cookies.  If interested, the recipe was posted on April 9, 2012 (the Jan. 26, 1946 letter).
