October 14 and 28, 1950 The Fall, Old Classmates, Wanting a House, Homecoming and Not a Hint of Blue

Cosmopolitan, September, 1950
Dear Mother, Daddy & Grandma,

"The leaves are turning and falling now and it is really like fall.  I'd love to go for a long ride through the Connecticut hills.  Fall was the most wonderful part of the year there.

Ann seems to have settled down a lot this week.  I'm almost afraid to say so, but I think we have finally found the right formula--skim milk and Karo.  I have started cereal too and she's doing pretty well on it.  Mrs. Simmons sent her the cutest dress--white with yellow collar and cuffs.  She looks so cute in it.

Lynn has had a cold so we haven't seen much of them this week until today.  We all went to campus to play.

The class in hat making is going to be very interesting.  Not only the hat making but the people in it--they are all middle-aged or older.  I have a piece of black velveteen for my first project.

I had a letter from Beulah this week and hope I can answer it before long.  I have so many letters to answer and don't seem to get it done.

We are going to an informal party Sunday night.  It is really a buffet supper but we just couldn't go at 6:00 so we are going about 8:00 just to visit awhile.

I bought a new dress last Saturday.  It is gold colored and part nylon--very pretty.  It has a high neck, tiny round collar, 3/4 sleeves and the skirt is box pleated in 1/2 inch pleats all around.  I keep getting slimmer  for I can fasten some of my skirts now although they are still pretty tight.  I've worked a little more on my brown dress--have the blouse and skirt ready to baste together.  It really wouldn't take very long to finish it if I could find a little time.

We could have rented a 5 room house this week but the rent was $70.80 and that's too much.  I answered an ad in the paper never dreaming that it would amount to anything.  The man called me up.  We didn't even go look at it after he told me the rent.  I'm going to keep trying.  Maybe I'll be lucky one of these days."

                 Lots of love,

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"This is Homecoming weekend and Normal is really a busy place.  There are a lot of things scheduled and B will have to be gone all day tomorrow.  We all hope to see the parade in the morning.  Then B goes to a luncheon and to the football game.  I wanted to go to the luncheon but it would be too big a job for Marge to take care of both kids that time of day.  B took Bobby to a football game this afternoon and he loved it.

Today is the first day I've had Ann out in two weeks.  The colds seems to be all gone but they sure were bad ones.  Bobby had it worse than Ann.  She never did lose her appetite.  She is about to work out her schedule and it follows pretty close to the 10, 2, 5 schedule.  She is pretty good now but still cries about going to sleep.  Maybe she always will.  Some babies do.

Mother, I hope you will rest a little now and not start cleaning house.

I finally got my brown dress done and have worn it twice.  It is real pretty and I had several compliments on it.

We went to a concert at school on Tuesday night--the Longines Symphonette.  I know you have heard them on the radio on Sunday.  Then I went to a missionary meeting at the church Wed. night.

So far, our hat making class has been a disappointment.  There are 25 in the class and we haven't done anything yet.  We are all disgusted.  Classes before have always done a lot so maybe we will when we get started.

Ann's hair is still real dark and is getting thicker.  You can't tell that any has come out but I find it on her clothes.  She still has all that long hair in the back.  Her eyes get browner every day.  There is no question but that they will be brown.  There isn't a hint of blue anymore.

Bobby still won't touch the cowboy pants and says, "Give them to Jerry".   We have tried every thing we know to get him to wear them so I guess that will be Jerry's Xmas present.

We have asked Horace and Mabel to come Thanksgiving but don't know whether they will or not.

Hope you are both fine."

              Lots of love,

                      Bonnie

NOTE:  The Longines Symphonette was a radio program of classical music, originally broadcast nightly, then on Sundays in the 50s.
