June 25, 1949 Back to Normal, So Happy Together, The Flat, The Hudson and Chicken & Dumplings

Keeping the babies cool

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"This is the only paper I can find--looks funny, doesn't it?

We are all fine.  Bobby has been so good all week that he has more than made up for his crossness last week.  He feels fine now and was go glad to get home.  We stopped to eat lunch before we got to St. Louis and he wouldn't stay out of the car long enough to eat.  He was cranky at Buddy's till we got back in the car.  Lynn hasn't had the roseola but we kept them apart till Tues. and then they were so happy to get back together.

Buddy looks so well but Bessie seemed tired.  He has 5 days over the fourth and said they'd come up here for a couple of days.  Wouldn't it be nice if they did come.

We are on the trail of a flat but I don't know whether we'll get it or not so we will wait and see.  Then I'll tell you about it.

Toni has been dressing chickens for the deep freeze so we're cooking bony pieces and dumplings for supper.

We looked at the Hudsons here yesterday.  They offered us $600. trade-in for our car.  B thinks he can do better with Ray but we're going to look around a bit.  We can't do anything till we find a place to live, though.

We expected a letter today but didn't get any.  Hope you are all fine."

                 Lots of love,

                        B, Bonnie & Bobby

Chicken and Dumplings

Stew a whole chicken or parts with 1 chopped onion, 1/2 c. chopped celery, 1 chopped carrot, salt & pepper.  Simmer as long as it takes to make a good broth.  When falling off the bones, strain, reserve liquid, remove skin and bones from meat and chop meat into small pieces.  Combine broth and meat.  Prepare dumplings:  Sift together 2 c. flour, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. baking powder in a large bowl.  Make a well in the center and add 2 beaten eggs.  Mix well and gradually add a small amount of milk until dough is soft and sticky.  Bring broth to a boil and drop dough in by tablespoon.  Reduce heat to simmer, cover and cook until dumplings are light and puffed, about 10-12 minutes.  Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with a pat of butter on top.

  1. I love this photo of the babies in the washbowls. We have a similar photo of my brother in one of these, and I have one of my daughter in one, too! I love when one photo transcends generations.

  2. I'm glad you like this picture--it's one of my favorites and it seems like such a simple time doesn't it? It's wonderful to hear from you, Lynne! Thanks for writing.
