February 23, 1946 The Foot of Spring Snow, Seeing the End of It, Ordering Chickens and The Unexpected Move

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Today is like spring outside--except for all the snow on the ground.  It is about twelve inches deep all over our yard.  We had a terrific storm Tuesday night and we still have the snow from it.  There was no school Wed. because of the storm.

I don't care what color my housecoat is so you take the sacks you want.  If you'll wait till I come home I'll make yours for you.

Why didn't you wait a while before ordering chickens?  It would be easier on you if the weather was a little better.

No, we didn't go to church Sunday.  We haven't been any place except school in so long I guess we won't know how to act.  Every minute has been spent on this dissertation but we can see the end of it now.

If everything goes well we can hand it in Monday or Tuesday.  Then there will be that awful waiting period before we know whether it will be accepted or not.  If it doesn't suit the committee (there are 5 of them) I don't know what we'll do.  That would mean starting all over again.  Revising this one will be bad enough.  But we'll soon find out.

B has been asked to stay at Hopkins next year so we may stay here.  Of course,  nothing has been discussed about it--money or anything--so we don't know.  But at least we know there is a possibility of staying.  It would be all right with me, too.  Hopkins has been awfully nice to us.

We had this place leased until the first of July but the man is being discharged from the army and they want their house.  We are moving this week while I have vacation.  We are going to share a house with a friend of ours.  I should say she is sharing it because she has it furnished and we're moving in with her.  You perhaps remember us speaking about the Scherick family.  The girl is Mrs. Scherick's sister and she is from Washington.  We've known her a long time.  The house is in a government project group.  It has three bedrooms so we should get along fine.  We plan to share expenses so our rent will be just about half what it is now.  It runs around $70. now.  We are not sorry that we are leaving here even if we have liked it.  The other place will be much nicer.  Send your next letter to 181 Mountain Road, New Haven, 15.  Our telephone number is 3-0266.  When we get some free time we'll send you some pictures of the house.

I must get back to typing so bye for now."

                             Lots of love,

                                      B & Bonnie

NOTES from Ann:  The soldier who had "a special project" and couldn't possibly be discharged, was discharged.  The timing wasn't great with B & Bonnie having to move the week the first draft of the dissertation was to be finished.  Fortunately, they always took everything in stride and ended up enjoying the new living arrangement.
