December 29, 1945 The Nice Christmas, The Car is Family, The Waitlists and Questions

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Happy New Year!  It seems like a long time since Christmas day.  I took out the tree today and the house looks sort of bare without it.  We had a real nice Christmas.  The things you sent were awfully nice and we certainly needed them.  I put two pairs of my pajamas in the rag bag this week and it is impossible to buy shirts.  They both fit fine.  Daddy is a pretty good shopper if you ask me.  B's folks sent us some money and a box of food.  It was the most interesting box--there were preserves, walnut meats, apples, sox for B and an apron for me.  Rosalynn sent candy and stationary, Buddy & Bessie sent a set of table runners and a scarf.  Sully & Bea gave us an album of records and Horace and Mabel sent me a scarf, B a belt and then a big piece of fruit cake, a record album and a big box of pecan meats.  B gave me a silver server, some pajamas, some paints and five dollars.  I gave him some flannel pants, a bow tie and an attachment for his camera so you see our tree was loaded down with presents.

For Christmas dinner we had a chicken, pumpkin pie and all the fixings.  We ate in the dining room with our best china and silver.

The weather today is terrific.  Everything is glazed over with ice.  There was a six inch snow on when we got up but it soon started to rain and freeze.  All day long it has rained and snowed at the same time.  The streets and sidewalks are a mess.  Our car is in the garage and will be until the end of next week because of the long weekend.  It's just as well though, since the weather is so bad.  B went to see how the workers were getting along and he thought they were doing a real nice job.  It seems like one of the family was gone.

I am making hot rolls for supper and have a pork roast in the oven.  I wish you could come and help us eat it.

Thank Beulah for the nice things she sent.  I want to write to her in a few days.  Both our hanky supplies are pretty low and B put his to immediate use.  The apron is one of the prettiest ones I ever saw.  The black just sets it off.

How is Beulah?  Did they come up Christmas?  I hope she is better.  Is Grandma all right now?  I hope so.  Do you ever hear from Mrs. Deberry?  I sent her a Christmas card.

Richland must be looking like itself again with all the boys back home and in their same jobs.

I have been wondering if Beulah got her electric iron for Christmas.  I wanted one too but B couldn't find one.  Mine never gets hot enough and I wanted a Sunbeam like Bessie's.  They had an awful waiting list.  It seems like everything you buy now you have to put your name on a list.  One of these days it will be over though.

Thanks again for the nice things and Happy New Year."

       Loads of love,

               B & Bonnie
