September 23, 1944 The Weather Improves, The Lazy Old Goat and The Gas from the Ration Board

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"We are having the most beautiful weather.  The sun is so bright but it is quite cool.  It won't be long till we'll have to have heat.

Everything is going fine at school.  B starts at Hopkins on Monday.  He went to a faculty meeting Friday and has his program all lined up.  His dissertation is coming along fine.

Yes, I feel better than I did before I had my tonsils out.  Today I had to take a thorough physical examination for Teachers College and I'm all right.  I weigh 116 with my shoes off and I think I have gained a little since we got home.  I don't get tired like I did last year and B helps me a lot.

Mabel Ann is getting a good rest.  They aren't sure she has arthritis and think maybe it is some other sort of rheumatism which will be easier cured than arthritis.  Horace has had his overseas examination and we're all holding our breath.  He seems so blue--especially with Mabel and Stevie gone.

Can't that lazy old goat drink milk out of a pan? It would or do without if I had to feed it.  You're spoiling it.

We haven't heard from Buddy and Bessie since we came home but we wrote to them.  Tell Beulah that she can't get by with answering my letter with a post card.  I'm still waiting for a letter.

The ration board gave us gasoline to drive to school--enough for B to drive mornings and me in the afternoon.

The Hurricane caused lots of damage in Conn.--1-1/2 million dollars of tobacco, a million of apples and 1/2 million of peaches.  It didn't make the fruit a bit cheaper though even if it did have to be sold immediately.

There isn't any play tonight so we'll spend the evening studying.  It's supper time and B is about to starve as usual so bye this time."

                                                              Lots of love,

                                                                      B & Bonnie
