October 28, 1944 Ilka Chase, The Football Game, Catsup At Last and Chicken Pie

 Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Thanks a lot for the points.  They will really come in handy.  We have been eating non-rationed meat and about all we could get was hamburger.  Last night I bought a frying chicken for $1.08 which isn't too bad.  It really tasted good.  I fried the good parts for supper and boiled the rest and made a chicken pie out of what meat I could pick off the bones.  We feel like millionaires having some blue points.  One of the first things B said was, "Now I can have some catsup."  That takes 50.

Today is a beautiful day.  Yesterday we had a flicker of snow and quite a bit of rain.  The woods are still pretty and I picked some bittersweet by the road as I came from school the other night.  So I have a pretty bouquet.

B has gone to the football game.  A friend called up and said he had an extra ticket because his wife couldn't go.  (Yale, 32--Rochester, 0)

There was a teacher's meeting this Friday so we didn't have school at the college.  It was nice to be at home for a while.

Ilka Chase
Last night we saw a play.  You've probably read about the book by Ilka Chase--"In Bed We Cry".  It was a fair play and people said it was better than the book.

I'm so glad you sold the cattle.  Now maybe you can both get a little more rest.  Do you still have the goats?  Did you sell Judy?

I think you got a good price for the bed.  Did that include springs, too?  I suppose you kept the mattress.

How is Daddy's shoulder?  Better, I hope.  Take care of yourselves and write soon."

                             Lots of love,

                                      B & Bonnie

Note from Ann:  Ilka Chase had an interesting background as an author and actress.  She had a role in the stage play of her own book, "In Bed We Cry".

Chicken Pie

Boil a chicken in 3 c. water to make broth.  Bone chicken and set aside.  Cook in 3 c. broth until tender, 2 c. cubed potatoes, 1-1/2 c. carrots sliced 1/2 " thick, 1 small onion, chopped and 1 c. sliced celery.  Drain vegetables and save broth.  Mix vegetables with 2 c. cubed chicken.  Spread in small flat baking dish.  Put broth in pan and stir in 6 T flour.  Cook until it thickens.  Add salt and pepper to taste.  Pour thickened broth over vegetables and chicken.  Make a topping of 1-1/2 c. flour, 3 tsp. baking powder, 3/4 tsp salt, 5 T oleo and 1 egg with enough water to make 1/2 c. liquid.  Stir together with a fork.  Roll gently to fit over vegetables and chicken mixture.  Bake 45 min. @ 400.  Can also use a regular lard crust for crisp topping.
