August 12, 1944 The Ice Box, Making Rubber Bands and No Material To Be Found

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Your letter came this morning and it was so good to hear from you.  It seemed like ages since we had seen you or heard from you. It has been a little hard to get used to having to cook and do housework again.  We haven't done very much.  Several days of this week were real cool so I got the living room cleaned.  We turned the rug around and swept out a ton of dirt (more or less.)

This is how it works
Our old broken refrigerator was still here when we got home so we gave up hopes of ever getting it fixed.  We bought a nice used ice box (the old fashioned kind) for $8. and it serves the purpose very well.

One day this week B had the car washed and in the afternoon we drove out into the country.  He was going to polish it but by the time he changed the oil and did a lot of little things that needed to be done it was getting late so we're going to polish it one of these days.

Much to our surprise B had another Yale check waiting for him when we got here.  We thought he had received all of them for the year but this was a regular months pay.  Needless to say, we were happy to get it.

I went to Willa Caughlan's to the Dames Tuesday night.  We cut old rubber gloves up into rubber bands.  Those cut from the wrists are used on bandages and the little ones cut from fingers are used around bottles.  Caughlans are leaving in Sept. We will hate to see them leave but he has a job in Boston.

Mother, I looked for your underwear and dress material and couldn't find either one.  There were two pieces of material but one was bright blue and the other had a wide stripe.  Neither one was pretty and I don't think you'd like them.  I wore my new pink dress to the Dames and got lots of compliments on it and the button holes.

The weather is plenty hot but our apartment is cool.  Last night after the sun went down we walked to the library and then sat in the park awhile.

I think I've told all the news and B tells me to save some ink for him to write to his folks.  Write soon."

                                                          Lots of love,

                                                                    B & Bonnie
