April 14, 1945 The Thunderbolt, Bonnie Wants to Dig and Save Your Feed Sacks

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It was so nice to get your happy letter after so much sadness.  The President's death struck us both like a thunderbolt.  We were just sitting down to supper when we heard it and our supper didn't taste very good.  New Haven, like the rest of the world was so shocked that people just didn't know which way to turn.  Yesterday we had a memorial assembly program at school and today almost every denomination in town has had memorial church services of some kind.  Most of the stores are closed this afternoon and it is just like Sunday.

We heard that a tornado had killed several people in Missouri but haven't been able to find out what towns it struck.

Yesterday was our anniversary.  B gave me an album of Yale Glee Club records and a book of Yale songs.  We had wanted them for a long time.  I gave him a tie and some camera stuff.  Sully brought us a box of candy and the Coggers sent us a lovely card.  Sully came last night but has already left.  We plan to celebrate B's birthday next weekend with a dinner party.  Sully & Bea are coming for the weekend and we're going to ask Coggers for Sat. night dinner.

We're having the most wonderful weather.  It's warm enough to have all the windows open.  Last Sunday we went to Scherick's for dinner and then went for a long walk.  They live at the base of a big hill and there are paths all over so we had a real nice walk.   The violets are out and the trees are beginning to leaf out.  I wish I could help you cut potatoes and plant them too.  I would love it.  Sometimes I get to wanting to dig in the dirt so badly.

You better start saving your feed sacks.  I saw in the paper that the gov't. was going to stop them from putting out the printed ones because they were never sold back to the feed men and there was a shortage of sacks.

Tell Beulah I'll write as soon as I can.  It seems that the nearer it gets to the end of the school year the more there is to do.

We have tickets to some 1 act plays that the Yale Drama School is presenting next Thursday evening.

There isn't any news so write soon."

                                   Lots of love,

                                           B & Bonnie
