June 20, 1943 Father's Day, Meatloaf and The Bomber on Campus

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"This is Father's Day and I hope you are both having a very nice day.  I hope you won't be disappointed when you don't get a letter early in the week but I had so many things to do that I completely forgot to write Friday night.  B worked two hours overtime Friday so we had a late supper.

It is really warn now but there is usually a breeze.  I cooked the whole morning but we had a good dinner.  I made a meatloaf and mince pie.

I went to the Dames last week.  One of the girls and her husband went to the World's Youth Peace Conference in Holland in 1928  and they showed us movies that they took in Europe.  They explained the pictures and it was very interesting.  For refreshments she had Coca Cola and a big platter of Ritz crackers, cheese crackers, pretzels and a lot of other things like that.

Last night we walked down town and sat in the park a while.  We may go to the show this afternoon.

I haven't added any to my glassware, but managed to find time to occasionally add a block to my tablecloth.  It grows awfully slow.

I suppose you got your package, Daddy, and I hope you got it before the candy all ran out.  Write soon."

                                                         Worlds of love,

                                                                      B & Bonnie

The article begins, "Yale University's historic Old Campus, where once lived Nathan Hale, Noah Webster, and William Howard Taft, was snapped even more into the atmosphere of modern war with the appearance today on the Campus lawn of the entire fuselage of a B-25 Martin Marauder bomber."  The article concludes with, "Opportunity to Learn" as follows: " Appearance of the plane is in keeping with the Technical Training Command's policy to approximate as closely as possible in training the actual conditions as will be found in the field overseas.  The policy is designed to give students the maximum opportunity to learn by doing with their own hands and to know their equipment by operating it under instruction.  The instruction plan was developed by Maj. Gen. Walter R. Weaver, Commanding General of the Technical Training Command, founder of the Air Force's first aircraft mechanic's school during World War I."  (New Haven Evening Register, Wednesday, May 26, 1943)

NOTE from Ann on the World Youth Peace Conference, 1928:  The following link provides lots of information on this event during which 450 young people from 32 countries gathered in Holland to discuss all aspects of both war and peace.  The information on the International Law of Youth Rights is especially interesting.  Here is the link:
