April 6, 1943 Soldiers Just Wanna Have Fun, Eleanor Gets A Little Bad Press and Rationing
Dear Mother & Daddy,
"We're just fine but are having to work pretty hard. We are really having crazy weather now. One day last week the sun was shining real bright and the snow was just flying. The wind has been blowing pretty strong and is rather cold.
There wasn't any play Saturday night so we stayed home and Sully ate supper with us. Yesterday we went to church as usual and then went to Griffins for the afternoon and supper. We had a real nice time.
There is a Dames meeting Wednesday night. I'll probably go to that. Someone was wrong about Mrs. Roosevelt being late because she was right on time. She did make other appearances in Conn. the day before she came here so maybe the paper meant she was late for some of her other meetings.
The army has taken over about 5 apartment houses across the street and they are full of soldiers. I really get a kick out of watching them. They seem to have such a good time--just like a bunch of little boys.
We've been getting along just fine with rationing. In fact, we have had more meat since they started rationing than we did before. We can buy it now and before rationing there wasn't any to buy. We have plenty of canned goods, too.
Are the potatoes up yet? Ha! Too bad I couldn't have been there to help you drop them. I would really have enjoyed it. Is everything green now and the trees beginning to leaf out?
We have another boss now. He came today and is real nice. Mr. King didn't like New Haven and was so homesick that they transferred him back to Penn.
Mother, I guess by the time you get this letter your birthday will have come and gone. I hope it will be a happy one for you. I'll write in a few days. Tomorrow is my wash day so I had better go to bed."
Loads of love,
B & Bonnie
