April 12, 1943 More Rationing, More Dames, "First Love" and Muffins

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It's a beautiful day and we went to church this morning as usual.  B is working on some themes and we're trying to type those but we aren't making much headway.

We got your letter Friday.  I was so glad to get it, because it seemed so long since we had heard, I was beginning to get worried.  We're just fine and were glad you liked the tray, Mother.  I guess it got there without getting broken.  I was afraid it might get broken because we didn't have much to wrap it with.

You must have made hay while the sun shone if you did all you said.  How are you both feeling over it all now?  Are the chickens big enough to fry?  Ha!  I asked the price of frozen chicken last night and they were .71 a pound.  We managed to get a 2-1/2 lb. pork roast which really tasted good.  It took 16 points but we have had plenty of points to buy all we want of meat and canned goods.  Since meat rationing began we have had meat every day.

I don't know whether we'll get to go see Kenny or not now.  We get 1/2 gal. of gas a week and that isn't very much.  It would take almost a full tank of gas to make the round trip.  New London and Groton are the same place.  They are just across the river from one another like St. Louis and E. St. Louis.

We had a Dames meeting Wednesday night.  It was more of a party then anything  because it was the last one we will have in the Lounge for the duration.  We reorganized completely and are going to do away with the constitution and formality for the duration, because we cannot plan ahead with the government taking so much of the school.  We are going to continue our meetings in private homes and sew or discuss different topics.  We had a personal letter from Eleanor Roosevelt thanking us for her nice time in New Haven.  http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2011/feb/08/spouse-band-together-help-recruitment/

I added six cake forks to my silver the other day.  A jewelry store advertised them for .25 each so I got some.  It was the only pattern he had.  They won't be used much but they would ordinarily cost $1.50 each and I thought they were certainly worth a quarter if I used them just once.

Rogers Bros. "First Love"
Tuesday is our anniversary.  It doesn't seem like two years since we were married.  We've really covered a lot of ground and seen lots of things in that two years.

We're going to have bran muffins for supper.  I bet you would like those, Daddy.  I've run out of news so bye for this time.  Write soon."

Loads of love to you both,

                                         B & Bonnie
