January 5, 1952 The Leak, The Dinner Party, The Square Dance Group, Streets Like Glass, Ann is Awake and Pimento Cheese

Ann & Bobby, January, 1952 photos included in letter
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"I have to stop and think what day it is!  This week has been kind of hectic and of course, we haven't done much of anything we wanted to do.  Water got into the pump motor on our washer and now that has to be rebuilt.  A man was here to fix a leak in the machine and said that the motor was o.k. and to go on and use it.  It blew one fuse after another so B took it apart and found the trouble but couldn't do the rebuilding.  We'll probably be without a washer for a week or so and I'll do what I need to wash at Toni's.

We went to a dinner party Thurs. night and really had a good time.  We learned to play canasta--at least, enough to play and it was lots of fun but there are an awful lot of rules.

Ladies Home Journal, Dec., 1951
Last night we were co-hosts at the square dance group and had to prepare refreshments.  I fixed pimento cheese sandwiches and the other girl made chicken salad sandwiches and then we had cokes with them.

The ice storm missed us but we have more snow and it's packed so hard on the streets they are like glass.  This town doesn't seem to know what a snow plow is.

I hope John Henry's baby is about well now.  You know Ann had bronchitis last winter and it certainly scares you and is dangerous.

Ann is awake from her nap so I'll have to stop."

                 Lots of love,

                         Bonnie

 Pimento Cheese on Rye

Grate enough cheddar cheese or longhorn to make 2 cups.  Add 1 T very finely chopped red onion, 1 T sweet pickle relish, 1 T very finely chopped celery, 2 T finely chopped pimento and mix well.  Gradually add enough mayonnaise to bind cheese very lightly.  Taste and add salt and pepper.  Spread on rye bread, remove crusts and cut into triangles.  Can also melt butter in a skillet and toast sandwiches on both sides to serve hot.

Hear the top hit from the first week of January, 1952. It was one of B's great whistling tunes.
