October 13 and 21, 1951 The Tailoring Class, Bobby Washes Dishes, Ann Unfolds Diapers, The Stuff Works Miracles, The Green Suit and The Groceries

Good Housekeeping, Oct., 1951
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"The children are in bed and B has gone to a football game.  Watty went too so Toni and I have the house to ourselves.

I went to my first class in Tailoring last night.  I think she will be a good teacher and we should get lots done.  I went downtown for a little while this afternoon to look for a pattern and some material.  We have to have it bought before next Thurs. but I'll have to go down again.  I found two pieces of material I liked but couldn't find a pattern.

The faculty women's club had their first meeting last night in the form of a picnic which turned out to be a pot-luck supper indoors.  The weather was nice yesterday but it has been so changeable we were afraid to plan it outside.  I was on the food and menu committee and we served 210 people.  Everyone seemed to enjoy it a lot.  We were through eating before 6:30 so I left then to get to my class on time and didn't get to stay for the program or business meeting.

The children's colds are better but I have a terrible one now.  I think I'll go to bed soon for it is so hard to breathe that I get tired.

Bobby dried the dishes for me tonight and he was as proud as punch.  It was a picnic to watch him.  He would put a plate on the table and dry one side, then turn it over and dry off the other side.

Maybe there will be more news next week.  There certainly isn't any now.  What have Beulah and Nobel got done on the house now?"

                Lots of love,

October 21, 1951

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"We went to school last night to a reading of a play so I didn't get this written.  B was gone to Peoria County all day yesterday on school business.  He and Bobby have gone to the grocery store and Ann is standing on the couch unfolding diapers that I just folded.  She is still sleeping all night without a bottle so I guess she is finally over that.  She is good in the daytime too unless she gets bored.

Both children are over their colds now and I am about all right, too.  I thought mine was gone and I got a terribly sore throat that really got me down like they used to before I had my tonsils out.  The Dr. came and gave me a big shot of penicillin and the next day I went to his office for another small shot.  The stuff works miracles.  The glands in my neck are still swollen but it will probably take a while for them to go down.

Ladies Home Journal, Dec., 1951

There is a tea tomorrow for all new faculty people.  We were asked to bring Mrs. Wells (who took Jim's place) and introduce her around.

We were so sorry about Herbert.  How is Ruby taking it and what is she going to do?

If I can ever find time I want to write to Beulah.  Seems like we are on the run constantly.

My legs are fine now.  Maybe it was the dew on the grass as someone suggested.  Course, I can't hang clothes out now, at least I can't real early in the morning.

I bought green material for my suit.  When I cut it I'll send you a scrap.  I was lucky for I found some on sale.  It is awfully high.  The whole thing, lining and all however, is going to cost less than $20.00.  I'm going to make a three quarter coat and skirt and either a jacket or weskit, whichever I have enough material for.  Then I'm going to take B's old Tuxedo coat and make a jacket and trim it in the green so I'll have a three piece suit.

Wheelers are still homesick but are getting acquainted a bit so maybe they'll soon have some friends and feel at home.  The climate there has been wonderful, of course.

I hear B coming with groceries so I'll have to stop and put them away--a job I don't like very much.

Hope you both are fine."

                  Lots of love,

                           Bonnie
