April 14, 1951 Short, Stocky, Likes Crack Filler, Sick of Rain and Snow, An Awful Bump and Worried About Cats

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It isn't even 5:00 yet but Ann is up to stay.  She sleeps so little in the daytime and then gets up so early.  It doesn't give us much rest.  We took her for a check-up yesterday and I thought maybe the Dr. would suggest some way of making her sleep better.  But he said I was doing everything just right and she's just this way.  He said she'd probably give up her night bottle when she's a year old.  She weighs 18 lbs. 3 oz. and is 26-1/2 in. long.  He called her the short, stocky build.  She crawls so fast now that she can disappear in a minute and I have to hunt for her.  We have to watch her for she picks the chunks of crack filler out of the floor.  I'll be glad to get moved where we have good floors.

You must be having the same kind of weather that we are.  I am so sick of rain and snow.

I don't get much done.  I'm working on a hat for Eve and have been trying to make a dress for weeks but can't seem to get it finished.  It is that blue figured piece that I had when you were here last summer.

Bobby is fine.  He and Lynn will go wild when we move over there until the new wears off.  They play so hard when we get together.  He got an awful bump this week--slipped on a rug when he was running and fell against the door facing.   He hit his forehead and so hard that it broke the skin.  It scared me but he was all right in a little while.

People are still wondering what will be done with Mrs. Smith's houses.  The house next to us has two big apartments in it.  I guess no one will ever know how many cats she had.  The exterminators are still using poison gas in the house.  Some of the older cats are too smart for them.  One of her nicest cats is still on the loose and is beginning to look terrible.  Its hair is coming out and it's getting so thin.  She had some cousins and that's all her relatives.  It is a pitiful case.

The kids and I are driving to Strawn with Toni to get Watty's mother.  It is a sunny day for a change and should be a pleasant drive.

We are so anxious to get moved but dread the job.  It will be a big one.

I must get the dishes done and my hair combed so I'll be ready when Toni comes."

                  Lots of love,

                        Bonnie

NOTE:  While Truman was attempting to engage China and North Korea in peace negotiations, Gen. MacArthur was advocating an expansion of the war efforts.  This ultimately resulted in his dismissal.  See his farewell address to Congress below:
