January 21 and 28, 1950 Too Busy to Think, Leftover Plum Pudding, Some Wonderful Days and The Little Miser

January 21, 1950

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"B is using the desk so I'm writing on a box and you may not be able to read this.  Bobby is fine and asleep.  He fell in the hall today and got a bad bump on the forehead but was all right in a little while.  It will be blue for several days, though.  Since Wed. was B's day in Springfield we didn't have a chance to do much birthday celebrating.  We had a cake with candles and ice cream at noon.  Lynn was here in the morning and then Brother (2 yr. old Wheeler) came in the afternoon.

Carol had a cold and couldn't come and it almost killed her so we sent her a candle and a piece of cake.  We hope to get the bond tomorrow.  B has been too busy to even think hardly.

Daddy doesn't need to bother about the stool now.  We have a stool Bobby has been using and I doubt if he would change now so let's wait and there will be something else Daddy can make for him sometime when he has more time.

B made his last trip to Springfield this week.  We are so glad it's over although he enjoyed it.  We wanted to go once more but it has been too cold.  Jim goes to Decatur next semester.  The older man will never be back.   He is bad off and failing pretty fast.  B has always said that when he had to stop teaching he would die and that seems to be the way it is.  Classes ended today and next week is exam week.  B hopes to get a little rest before classes begin again.

Beulah doesn't need to bother about Bobby's birthday.  Tell her to save a can of ribs and we'll eat that next summer and celebrate his birthday all over.

Do you think there is enough print for a full quilt?  I didn't dream of that but if there is just let Grandma piece it.  It will be something for her to do and we can use it as a bedspread sometime, maybe.  Then Bobby can have something to keep and use which she has made for him.

We still have plum pudding that I've saved to use at a dinner party but haven't got around to giving the party.  It keeps for ages though, so there's no hurry.  We didn't buy a lot of candy and stuff since we came home.

We have two new catalogs and things seem a little cheaper.

My ankle seems to be well except for a few blue spots and that knot that came up, but is not sore and will probably never go down.

I hope Aunt Nora is better.  Burns can be so painful and so slow to heal.  Hope you both are fine."

        Lots of love,

             B, Bonnie & Bobby

Happy 2nd Birthday, Bobby!

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It's cold again after some very wonderful days.  Everyone complained about the hot days but I'll be glad when they get warm to stay for awhile even if we haven't had much winter.

Bobby had us up a good part of last night.  He was catching cold and was all stopped up.  Today he has a good head cold.  He has had an upset stomach all week but a new molar has broken through and that was the trouble.  He is about over that and now has to have a cold.

Monday is registration for the new semester and B dreads the long, monotonous day.  The older man died yesterday and B is to be a pall bearer on Monday.  His daughter called last night and said that it was cancer but he died peacefully in a coma.  I'm sure it is a relief to them to know that he won't be suffering any more.

We bought the $50. bond for Bobby and he had 3.00 in pennies alone.  He is getting to be a little miser--even asks Rosemary for pennies.

Bobby got some pants and the cutest shirt from Beulah yesterday.  I must write to her soon.  They sure have a time--are sick so much.

What is your coat like?  I think I'd like the dark green for you or myself either but how is it made?

I hope Beulah and all the rest of you are over your colds by now.  There are so many people sick now with colds and virus infections.  Take good care of yourselves."

                 Lots of love,

                       B, Bonnie & Bobby
