Dear Mother & Daddy,
"It's so cool today that we have part of the windows closed. I'm glad though, because we are still having to work hard getting our house in shape. Things are pretty well straight here except the furniture we ordered hasn't come. It's good to have our own things once more. Bobby seems to enjoy running all over the place and having all his things in one room. He is fit as a fiddle once more. B has been working over at 308 North St. and is trying to clean that place. It is such a big job but we want to get it done as fast as we can.
We got another bushel of apples to can tonight so I'll probably start on those tomorrow.
Hope you are both fine and that we have your letter tomorrow."
Lots of love,
B, Bonnie & Bobby

Dear Mother & Daddy,
"We are glad you got home without any trouble, Mother and hope you are rested by now. I know the trip was terribly tiring for you but we were so glad to have you with us that little while. Maybe it won't be long till both of you can come. After being told two or three times Bobby seemed to understand why you left and stopped asking. He knows that B goes to school every day and tries awfully hard not to cry when he leaves and gets all excited when he hears him coming. Jim ate supper with us Wed. night and Bobby showed off as much as he could.
The chair and cedar chest came yesterday but I haven't done much toward emptying the chest. We are enjoying the chair, though.
I haven't done much this week. I did another washing and finally got caught up on my ironing. Bobby and I have been walking with Toni and Lynn again and Toni told me yesterday that she expects another baby in Jan. or Feb. She is just fine.
I guess I won't try to can anymore, although there are still tomatoes and peaches but we still have so many little jobs to do to the apartment.
There isn't much news so bye for now."
Lots of love,
B, Bonnie & Bobby
From the Ball Blue Book of Canning, 1943 |
Though I haven't done too much in my adult life (something I hope will change over time - especially if I ever get a produce garden of my own), I used to help my mom and grandmothers can all summer long when I was a little girl, and thoroughly enjoyed it. To this day I can't pass a peach tree with fruit on its branches and not get the urge to suddenly sterilize some canning jars :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you a beautiful weekend, dear Ann,

I so admire the resourcefulness of families who continue to "put up" food and have the advantage of a full pantry year round with wonderful local produce. I went a little crazy at the farmers' market this morning, have no idea how to can anything, but hope to make a couple peach pies and try my hand at pickled peppers! Thanks for sharing your happy memory and I hope you have a garden soon!
