May 25, 1946 Taking Care of Delinquents, The Housing Shortage,The New Address and Oodles of Love

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"At last we're having the kind of weather we should have--warm and sunny.  Even the New Englanders had begun to gripe about the cold, wet days.

Are George & Cliffie living in Grandma's house now?  Or does anyone live there?

We did have a nice time on our trip even if we almost froze.  I must say that Conn. certainly takes care of their young delinquents.  The schools for them are almost perfect.  They have everything to work with.  It is too bad that good children can't have schools like that.

The things you hear about the housing shortage are not exaggerated the least bit.  It is simply awful.  You needn't worry about us for our friends seem to look out for us.  We have had all kinds of offers of places to live for the summer.  We decided to take the apartment at Hopkins in hopes that we won't have to move again in the fall.  If the enrollment is so large that they need the rooms for classrooms we will have to, though.  Dr. Lovell said he would probably know by July 1 so there will be lots of time to look for a place if we do have to move again.  The apartment is not furnished but we had bought some of Dorothy's furniture when she left and there are a few pieces in the apartment that we can use so the only thing we plan to buy is a dinette set and then if we stay next fall we may buy some new things.  The heads of the school are so afraid B will not stay here next year is one reason the apartment was offered to us.  I guess they think we may move out of town if we can't find any place to live.  We don't have to pay any rent this summer.  Dr. Lovell said that if the light bill was extra big we could pay some on it but that wouldn't amount to anything.  Of course we will have to pay rent next year if we stay but I doubt if it would be very much.  We are going up this afternoon to get it ready to move next week--probably Wednesday.  Don't forget to send your next letter to 986 Forest Road, New Haven, 15.  If you should have to call us just call Hopkins Grammar School.

The little sweater is all ready to mail as soon as the strike is over.  I have the last two Journals fixed to send, too.

I don't know whether I'll can anything or not this year.  I may just loaf.  We are certainly looking forward to our trip home.  I can hardly wait.

Take good care of yourselves and write soon."

                      Oodles of love,

                            B & Bonnie

  1. Perhaps it's because I recently moved homes and so can relate to the hunt for a house (there were very few worth mentioning in our price range, as the real estate market here isn't booming quite like it used to at the moment), but I think this is one of my favourite letters so far.

Heartfelt thanks for your wonderfully sweet comment on my vintage outfit post this week, Ann. I adore the name Tickleberry's, too, and can't help smile whenever I say it :)

Oodles of hugs & cheerful Tuesday wishes,
    ♥ Jessica
