September 11, 1943 Pleasure Driving, Italy Gives Up and B's Brother is Called

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Since the pleasure driving ban has been lifted, we can go out in the car a little bit.  Sunday we went for a drive and the country is beautiful.  After B got home from work Monday we fixed a picnic supper and went to the beach to eat it.  We stayed long enough to see the moon come up over the ocean and it was certainly a beautiful sight.  I can watch the ocean for hours.

We are both just fine.  My gum has just about healed and hasn't bothered me at all.  I am anxious to know what the doctor tells you, Mother.  Why didn't you go back to St. Louis?

Horace
Horace wrote to us about the army.  He got a commission in the medical corps and will go in the army as a second lieutenant.  I guess it is for the best, but I couldn't keep from crying when we got his letter.  When he gets to the barracks in Penn. he will be only about 250 miles from us so maybe he'll get to come up to see us or meet us some place.

The war news is a bit more encouraging since Italy gave up.  New Haven was certainly buzzing the day that happened.  People were talking about it everywhere you went.  New Haven is 60% Italian.

We got a $100. bond today.  B has been having them take so much out of each pay check and we got our first bond today.

Since we got the chess board we have been playing a lot in the evening.  It's lots of fun.  I went to Dames Wednesday night and B and Mrs. Hunt's brother spent the evening playing.

We still haven't found an apartment.  They are certainly scarce, but we need more room.

There just isn't any news, so I had better read my Bible and go to bed."

                                                       Lots & lots of love,
                                                             B & Bonnie
