August 28, 1943 A Note to Daddy, Yale Mourns Again, The Sailor and the Invasion of Sicily, and Where is Sully?
Dear Mother & Daddy,
"We had three nice letters today--yours, Beulah's and B's mother's. I'm so glad you went to Mary's & Martha's. There really was a crowd, wasn't there?
Yale is mourning over the loss of another great man. You probably read about the death of William Lyon Phelps. We were lucky enough to hear him speak before he had the stroke that eventually killed him. He was an ordained Baptist minister and a wonderful speaker.
We went to church Sunday, as usual, and after lunch we went to the library. The chapel is always full of sailors and soldiers.
One of the girls in the studio has a boyfriend in the navy. He has just come here for a few days leave. Their ship is back in harbor from the invasion of Sicily. He is only 21 but has seen plenty of action. It was their job to shell the shore while the troops landed. He told lots of interesting things and said that in one place the Italians had their things packed and were sitting on their suitcases waiting for the Americans to come to take them prisoners.
Sully hasn't been here since he told me about his reclassification. I don't know whether he passed or not. He hasn't even written to us. We keep looking for him, but maybe he's too busy to come down.
Do what you like with the sugar stamps. We don't need them at all. I hope you had a nice birthday, today, Daddy. I've been thinking about you."
Lots & lots of love,
B & Bonnie
