"We got your letter and needless to say we were very happy to get the stamps. B's mother sent some too and we have been able to buy some cheese and a steak for the first time in weeks. I gave 15 points for a swell steak Wednesday and made hot rolls to go with it. B really did eat. I hope you kept plenty for yourself.
I always have Wednesday afternoons off because the stores close at 12:30--at least they do through the summer. It helps a lot and gives me time to bake and read. I don't have to rush so much to get to Dames on time, either. We met this week and took our husbands. Everyone had a good time. We went to Hansey's--they are the couple from Hawaii. There were 18 of us and she had card tables all set and we had our dessert first. She served apple pie, cheese (just a tiny piece) and coffee. She had nuts and candy too. We just talked and after we had eaten they showed color movies of the Hawaiian islands which were lovely. Their home was only about 10 miles from Pearl Harbor and they sold it last winter. They are through at Yale and are leaving New Haven in about two weeks. She gave us all some tomatoes out of her own garden. They are so good. They are cheaper now--we get 2 lbs. for .15.
I bought a new dress today. It is a summer dress that was on sale. You will probably be shocked when I say it is orange and brown checked linen. It's very pretty though and was marked down from $14.95 to $4.00 so I thought it was a bargain. I haven't bought a winter dress yet but have been thinking about a black one to start fall with. The weather we are having makes one think about fall clothes. The last two weeks have been wonderful--cool and comfortable.
How are your eyes, Mother? Who were you going to in Springfield. Dr. Cheek in the Medical Arts building is about the best. He operated on Arlie's eyes and tested B's eyes for his glasses. You better write for an appointment before you go because most of those Doctors take an afternoon off and you would just about miss him.
Who does your wash? Mine aren't extra big and I don't mind doing them.
I wrote for a Sears Catalog and have been having a swell time looking at it."
Worlds of love,
B & Bonnie
NOTE from Ann:
Dick Haymes' "You'll Never Know" was another favorite tune. Its last day as the #1 hit was August 14, 1943. Listen if you'd like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgBWumm95gw
