November 8, 1942 Thinking about school, The Dames and The New Dress

Malleys (www.retailmemories.com)
 Dear Mother & Daddy,

"I like my work fine and I am really enjoying it.  I don't know whether they will want me to work after Christmas or not.  It won't matter much one way or the other because I'm thinking about starting to school.  There is a fully accredited State Teachers College here in New Haven.  Tuition is cheap, $10. a semester, but you have a $10. activity fee to pay and a $4. gym fee.  B thinks if I would go ahead & get my degree there would be a possibility of me getting a scholarship to Yale so I could get my Masters or Ph.D. sometime--if we are here long enough.  The first time we have a chance we're going over to the college and see what we can find out.  Yale won't have me there now.  They don't accept women in the undergraduate school.

I finally got to the Dames meeting.  It was like any women's club meeting.  I got me a new dress to wear but nobody was dressed up.  I had to give $9.00 for it.  It sure made me feel badly--ha! I got me a new white blouse, too.  Dues for the whole year are $1. and you have to take a dime each time for your refreshments.  Everything was informal and friendly.   They had a business meeting, then a speaker and refreshments.  You may take your choice of the study group or the bridge group.  They said that in recent years each of the topics had a certain group.  That was when there were about 250 Dames and they had lots of money.  Now there are about 40 or 50 Dames so they have only two groups.  I think I'll join the study group.  It would be a bit more intellectual, I imagine.

Hope to hear from you soon."

           Loads of love,

                    B & Bonnie
