September 2, 1947 A Little Trip, A Little Knitting, A Little Suitcase and A Lot of Vegetables

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"This will be early but we're taking a little trip tomorrow and I didn't want to write late this week.  The Swanns asked us to drive up to their summer house in Vermont so we're driving up in the morning and coming back Tuesday evening.  It will be about 200 miles each way.  We are leaving about 8:00 in the morning and just take our time to see the pretty country we've heard so much about.

The Hesses got home Friday and they were a tired family.  B met them at the train and I had lunch for them. They were so pleased that we had the lunch especially.  It was nice having the house to ourselves that two weeks but it's real nice having them home, too.

B's school work is over for about two weeks.  He worked hard grading test papers the last day so he wouldn't have any work to worry about.  We went to the Richard's yesterday and came home with another load of vegetables.  Today we went over and took a roll of color pictures of their place.  It is lovely now.  The lawn is nice and they have so many beautiful flowers.  They want us to take a roll of black and white pictures next week.  It is interesting to look at the ones we took last summer before the place was ever cleaned up.  There is quite a contrast.

We made some candy to take to Swanns and took some to Richards too.  They were real pleased--they are just like kids.

My tablecloth has been put away again and I've been knitting.  I have made a pink cap and mittens and am making soakers now.  Once I start to knit I don't want to stop.  That tablecloth may never get finished.

I bought a little suitcase.  It is a brown with leather bindings and will last a long time.  That little black one has made so many trips across this country that it looks pretty bad.

Hope you are both fine and that Daddy's package finally got there.

The houses I mentioned were four rooms (tiny) down and one upstairs with a full basement--cute but not 10,000. worth."

                Lots of love,

                      B & Bonnie

Quick Martha Washington Candy

Melt 1 stick of oleo and 1 can of sweetened, condensed milk.  Pour over about 1 qt. of chopped pecans.  Stir well to cover all pecans.  Let set about 30-60 min.   Mix in 1 large package of coconut and about 1-1/2 boxes (more or less) confectioners sugar.  Mix well and roll into balls.  Refrigerate 6 hours.  Melt 2 packages chocolate chips and add 1/8 lb. paraffin.  Dip balls and harden on buttered plate in a cool place.
