May 19, 1973 The Big Affair, The Librarians, The Children, The Salad Luncheon and The Watergate Hearing

Dear Mother,

"It's a beautiful day and we have lots to do. We are going to a wedding early this afternoon and it looks as if it's going to be a wonderful day for a wedding. One of Ann's classmates is getting married and it is going to be a big affair.

B has gone to school to welcome a group of librarians that are having a meeting on campus today. Then he has to do some office work afterwards so will spend most of the day there. We think we might go to a rock show in Springfield tomorrow if he gets his work done. Last week we took a long ride and ate in Urbana before coming home. That's why my call was so late.

We're anxious for next weekend since the children plan to be here. Bob wrote this week that he had passed all the tests so graduation is certain now. Of course we felt he would pass but there is always that uncertainty until you know for sure. Pat's mother had talked of coming for his graduation but she was here not long ago so I don't know. They are so proud of Bob though she may come anyway. She'd have only the weekend and that is a long trip for such a little time. She works in a bank.

I have one dress finished for Ann and finished up one for myself this week. I made it several weeks ago but it didn't look to suit me so I went back to the store, got more material and made a long dress out of it. Now it looks fine. There are more and more long dresses being worn but I haven't gotten used to them yet.

My iris are blooming and I have some gorgeous ones this time. I thought they were all ruined but they sure aren't. I still don't have my tomatoes out but the nights get cold so I guess there is no hurry. The petunias are doing fine but not growing much.

I have one more club meeting and then that will be over for awhile. It is a salad luncheon so I have to make a salad to take. Everyone takes a salad--any kind--and that's our lunch. It is a very nice party and everyone enjoys it.

I got my permanent Tuesday. It is real short and curly but will look better after I wash it and fix it myself. It does feel lots better.

B got home from Washington early Tuesday afternoon. He left about 6:00 Monday morning, did his work in Washington early Tuesday and caught an early plane home. Of course, he didn't have time for anything else but I was sure surprised and glad to see him early.

I did my volunteer driving yesterday and then spent the rest of the day watching the Watergate hearing. I had listened Thursday morning too and it is really fascinating. It is better than any mystery or soap opera could ever be but is frightening at the same time. I hope and pray that the president is telling the truth but I don't believe he is and I don't see how anyone connected with the White House can be clear of this. It is a disgrace but it may make our government stronger and cleaner when it is all over. The TV coverage is wonderful and I hope you are watching. I'm not getting much work done but the work (some of it) can wait.

I must write to the children so I'd better get that done while I can. I owe Beulah & Bessie letters too but I probably won't get them written today.
