Dear Mother,
"This will probably be a day late. We had company for dinner last night and I was so slow yesterday it took me all day to get ready. I need to have a dozen dinner parties but B has had so little time we just couldn't plan much ahead.
Pat called yesterday and asked if they could come so we are enjoying having them here, too. This is the first time they've been here since Xmas but Bob has had to work every Saturday. His work gets harder and more confining all of the time but he likes it and that means a lot.
This has been such a busy week. Both of my clubs met and I had a committee meeting here one evening. It was a big group but I just served tea, coffee and cookies. We are planning a reception for all the retired people in April. It's a lot of work.
I had a letter for Beulah not long ago but she didn't mention the quilt she was going to make. The blue should be real pretty. I rather like the deep colors and I think a royal or bright navy would be pretty. I saw a black & white one once and it was beautiful but was all over embroidery and not set in blocks. How many quilts have you made? I can't even guess.
What is wrong with Press? I hope he's better now.
Bruce Seeber's name is on the list of prisoners to be released today. I can hardly wait until this is over. He'll be kept in the Philippines for several days, supposedly, and then flown to a hospital in the states. The government will fly his parents, wife and children to see him. Maybe this will all really happen sometime this week. I can't even imagine how they all must feel.
We have snow and it is cold but every day that passes means it is closer to spring.
We had an announcement of Buddy's retirement the end of February so he's finally done it. I am glad and I must write to him soon.

That was a very emotional day and I felt absolute admiration for those guys. Survival school gave us a very small taste of what the POWs had endured. The best moment was Navy Captain (later Admiral) Jeremiah Denton's: "We are honored to have the opportunity to serve our country under difficult circumstances. We are profoundly grateful to our Commander in Chief and to our nation for this day. God bless America."
ReplyDeleteYes, that was a very powerful statement. I can't imagine what it must have been like to have spent a day as a POW much less years.
