June 29, 1964 Turkey: Kusadasi and Ephesus

Journal entries:  Always in italics.

June 29, Kusadasi.

Ashore early.  Kusadasi means Island of the Bird.  Crops are tobacco (can grow without water), cotton (means there is a well), temporary straw huts are near fields where people live 3-4 month every year to tend crops or cattle.  Women are free now.  Take any job.  Get divorce very easy.  Men must have good reason for a divorce--not easy.

Chickens, sheep, few camels, donkeys, horses.  Some threshing.  Houses in town of Kusadasi were white or creamy stucco or whitewashed--porches.  Peasants wore trouser-like pants, head tied up. City people ordinary western dress.

Ephesus

Amazons built first city, then Ionian, 5 cities in all.  Began excavation in 1926.  Planned to 2006.

Temple of Dianna was here.  One of the wonders of the world.  Paul preached against idols here. Imprisoned on a hill.  Mary spent last 9 yrs. here.  Here consul agreed that Mary was Mother of Christ.  Fig trees, olive trees.  John buried here.

Amber--wax smooth, light weight, "warm", rub & it attracts tissue paper, muted tone when tapped on things.  Amber beads.

Tomorrow, Istanbul.
