Dear Mother & Daddy,
"Are you still digging out of the snow? You must have really caught it. We have been lucky this week. The weatherman has predicted snow several times but so far it hasn't come. Yesterday was sort of spring-like and the snow has been melting fast.
B is working this morning but things have slowed down a bit at school so he probably won't be too busy. Ann is at Becky's and Bob is watching T.V. He went to a cooking class early this morning with the Scouts. They made biscuits and cooked them outside. He said he made 8 biscuits and ate 7 of them so they must have been pretty good.
I've been making Valentine cookies for my kindergarten to frost at Sunday School tomorrow. Won't they have fun?
I don't know where this week has gone. It seems like I've gone in a run and haven't got much done, either. I got a permanent one day and that took most of the day. Then I worked at Wesley's one afternoon. They are the ones who had the fire and I cleaned up dishes and pans that were smoked and sooty. People are still bringing them things and they'll be all right if they can ever get straightened up.
I don't want you and Daddy to worry about those tables. It won't matter if we don't get them till Xmas or next summer or even later. We've managed a long time without them.
We were hosts for our S. School supper last night and I had to make dessert so I made that cherry-cottage cheese thing. Ann has a flute lesson this afternoon & I have to go find a coffee pot. Our nice coffeemaker that we've had so long just wore out. The heating element wore loose from the bottom and it lets water into the element. There is no way to fix it.
I must get lunch so bye for now."

Okay, now my interest is piqued...can you tell us more about the "cherry-cottage cheese thing"? My mom had a few recipes with similarily vague names, too, the most famous around our house of which was called "Hamburger Mushroom Soup Stuff". Not the most appetizing sounding name perhaps, but goodness if the dish itself was scrumptious. I still make a modified, GF version myself to this, especially when the cold weather sets in the during the fall, because it's a filling, very stick to your ribs kind of meal.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of tasty recipes, thank you for very much your lovely comment on Friday's cake post. A&P didn't cross the 49th and make it up here into Canada, but I have certainly learned a bit about them over the years from their many lovely ads. What a shame that their numbers have dwindled so very much in recent decades. I hope, unlikely as such may be, that I'm able to get to one some day while visiting the US before they all vanish.

Hi Jessica! I had searched high and low for the cherry recipe hoping to post it. Mom found it in a pie ad in the Feb. 1961 Good Housekeeping and I don't have that issue. If memory serves, it was made of cottage cheese, cherry pie filling, cream cheese, jello and Dream Whip piled in a crust until it was firm. I'm sure it was very pink and probably a Valentine's Day featured recipe!
