January 2, 1955 Happy New Year! The Snow, The Sleet, The Ice, The Slides and The Sour Cream Pie

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It seems like I haven't gotten anything done since we came home but B got his paper written and we've just puttered around the house.  Bob has spent most of his time at Watterson's T.V.

We have stayed up so late this week that I am tired.  We showed some of our Japanese slides one night and Wattersons ate supper with us one night.

We were lucky to have come home on Monday for we've really had some bad weather--snow, sleet and ice.  It is gone now and is quite warm along with the mud.

It was nice the day we came home and I put my plants out in the yard that afternoon.  They still look fresh and green after all the snow.

One quart of cream was sour when we got home but I've been trying out some new recipes so used it that way.  Bob ate most of the other quart of cream.  He liked it thick on his cereal.  I made a real good sour cream pie.

We sold our crib.  When we got home there was an ad in the paper for two.  It stayed in the paper several days so I called and they bought ours.  I'm glad to have it out from under the bed.  That's the only place we had to keep it.

It hardly seems like we were home at all.  We have all been enjoying our Christmas presents.  Bob filled his scrapbook that was in his box with pictures from the Christmas cards.

Hope you are all fine.  Both of you seemed so well except when Daddy got his headaches.  He'd better have his glasses checked."

                 Lots of love,

                     Bonnie

Sour Cream Pie (from the Joy of Cooking, 1943 Ed.)

Prepare a baked pie shell.  Cook & stir in a double boiler until thick:  2 egg yolks, 1 whole egg, 1/2 c sugar, 1/4 t cloves, 1/2 t cinnamon, 1 c thick sour cream, 1/2 c finely chopped raisins and 1-1/2 t lemon juice.  Cool slightly and pour into shell.  Cover with meringue and bake at 300 for 15-20 minutes.

Sour Cream Walnut Pie

Combine in a double boiler 1/3 c. butter or margarine and 1/2 c packed light brown sugar.  Beat to melt butter.  In medium bowl beat together till smooth 4 eggs, 3/4 c sugar, 1/4 t salt, 1/2 c corn syrup and 3/4 c sour cream.  Pour egg mix into butter mix and blend.  Cook over hot, not boiling, water, stirring constantly for 5 minutes.  Remove from heat.  Stir in 1 c black walnuts and 1 t vanilla.  Pour into unbaked pie shell.  Bake in preheated 350 oven for 40 minutes.  Filling will be soft in center--do not overbake.  Cool on wire rack and top with whipped cream.
