May 21, 1949 Another Shabby House, More China, Cross, Disgusted and Without a Word

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"We've been house hunting again.  B is going to see the owner this afternoon.  It is a 5 room furnished house with a nice yard.  The inside is nice but the outside needs paint and looks shabby.  Rents for $65. furnished but we'd like to have it unfurnished.  We'll soon know, I hope.  The first house I told you about was rented long ago but the people still haven't moved out--soon will probably for they are waiting for their 16 yr. old son to finish high school before moving.

I'm sending some folders on china.  The Madison is the only gold band (too fancy) but the Rose is just beautiful.  I wish you would buy it.  The store would ship them to you and you could have them for your Circle party or we could bring them in June.  Why don't you buy the 12 place settings (125.40) and buy the other pieces a few at a time.  You have so much crystal to use you don't really need the cream and sugar right away although you would want them.  I just love the pattern.  The other patterns aren't very pretty.

Bobby is so cross.  Lynn is gone to Chicago and it has been cold and rainy for three days so we can't get out in the yard.  He needs to run and play outside.

I've made 2 blouses, a pair of overalls and a sun suit this week so have accomplished quite a lot.  One night I went to a Mothers Club and that's about all I've done.  The coat I ordered still hasn't come.  I'm getting disgusted.

The tea last Sunday was real nice.  Bobby was real good for Toni and watched us leave without a word."

            Lots of love,

                 B, Bonnie & Bobby

May 14, 1949 Bobby and the Seniors, Another House Possibility, Dogs on the Knees and The School Year Comes to an End

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"School will soon be out so the big rush is on.  Everyone seems to be having a picnic or party.  Yesterday the Seniors had their sneak day and went to Lake Bloomington (15 miles out) for a picnic.  We were invited but didn't go until Bobby had his nap.  That was about 3:00 and then we had supper with them.  Bobby ate hot dogs and ice cream with the rest of them and had a big time.  He's getting shy now so it took a while to get acquainted with them.  He has been so good about his vaccination and has felt good most of the time--only one afternoon I gave him an aspirin and then he was fine.  His arm hurt, I know, for he kept reaching toward it.  The scar will be pretty big but it is healing fast.

We heard about another house but the woman won't show it till next week.  I don't think we want it, though for it has no yard nor garage and is such a big house.  The living room takes 2 9x12 rugs so we'd have to buy so much furniture (6 rooms) and it is so far from school (in Bloomington).  We'll keep looking.

We're going to a tea tomorrow.  Toni will keep Bobby and we'll keep Lynn while they go.

I made a shirt and Bobby some overalls this week and have two blouses cut out--a white dotted swiss and the batiste you gave me at Christmas.  Both will be plain shirts.  Bobby's overalls are the cutest he's ever had.  They have dogs appliqued on for knee patches and he thinks they are so pretty.

We'll be starting home a month from today.  You'll be surprised how much Bobby has grown.

Hope you are both fine."

            Lots of love,

                  B, Bonnie & Bobby

NOTE from Ann:  2,000 students were enrolled at ISNU in 1949; this year, about 21,000.  It must have been a lot easier to find a parking spot in '49 although it didn't matter since we always lived easy walking distance to campus.  (Images from The Index, pictured above.)

May 7, 1949 Perfect Health But Walks Off Tables, B's Spring Fever and The House Hunt

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"We've had some hot days, too, but today is quite cool.  Bobby has been wearing the sun suits that I made last summer.  They have to have the buttons moved on the straps and then fit fine.  I must make some more for he'll need about a dozen.

He had his smallpox vaccination Tuesday and it's beginning to take.  So far, it hasn't bothered him a bit but he'll probably be a bit cranky for a day or two.  The doctor says he is still in perfect health.  He is 33-1/2" tall and not so fat now.  We don't have to take him for another examination for a year.  He is climbing till we're almost crazy sometimes--up on the dining table and kitchen table.  He just walks off too without realizing he will fall.

B has spring fever.  He has cleaned the basement and washed screens, windows and woodwork this week.  I told him I hope it lasted.

Yes, I'd like to have the striped sacks but save them till I come.  I have a lot of sewing to do now and want to get caught up.  I just finished a sundress out of the gingham B's folks gave me Christmas.  Then I have my birthday dress to make and have a cotton skirt partly done.  I have a couple cotton blouses to go with that to make and Bobby's sun suits--enough sewing to last a month.

We had the loveliest time at Aunt Ione's.  All her children were there (3 married ones and two at home).  She had an early buffet supper for us and we got home about 7:00.  Bobby was so good and played with the other babies there.

We can't find out about the house till the people there find out about the one they want.  An old woman lives in it and they are waiting for her to decide when she's going to Calif.  We haven't stopped looking for another place but will take this one if nothing else turns up.

Hope tomorrow is a nice day for you both."

                 Lots of love,

                         B, Bonnie & Bobby

April 30, 1949 The Awful House, Chickens in the Basement, The Busy Week and The Yale Man

Bonnie and the CT dogwood, June 1948
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"There is a redbud tree just outside our dining room windows and it is just full of bloom.  It is the first one I've seen in years for we didn't have them in Conn.  We haven't seen any dogwood yet.

We went to see that house and it was so awful we didn't know what to think.  It has been rumored that we can have it and I guess we'll take it but it sure will take a lot of work to fix it up.  Maybe when the dirt gets out of it, it won't be so bad.  The people have a battery of chickens in the basement among a lot of junk.  It is arranged nicely with a 12x15 kitchen.  The living room and dining room are big too.  There are 3 bedrooms and bath upstairs.  There is no yard around the house to amount to anything but there is a full lot to the side that belongs to the place so that could be made a play yard.  Maybe one of these days we'll be taking the cedar chest and that rocking chair you said we could have.

This has been a busy week.  B gave a talk at a dinner meeting Wed. night of the fraternity he recently joined.   Thurs. night I went to the Women's Faculty Club spring dinner and last night we went to a program at school.  We plan to drive to Peoria tomorrow afternoon for a short visit with B's Aunt Ione.

My tablecloth is ready to be washed and blocked at last.  I've been making Bobby some overalls and have them done except for the buttonholes.  They are easy to make.

I have a new white straw tam trimmed with a little black.  It's nice.

Yes, B knew the Yale man in New Haven but met him after we went to New Britain.  I had never met him.

We should know about the house in June probably.

My topper still hasn't come but I had a card saying the order would be delayed.  They must have been out of them.

Hope you are both fine."

               Lots of love,

                      B, Bonnie & Bobby

April 23, 1949 The Desk Drawers, The New Hire, The House, The Birthday Boys and The New Coats

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"I'll start this but may not get far.  Bobby is emptying the desk drawers and B has gone to have the car fixed.  Toni and I went to town this week and almost didn't get home.  The car kept dieing and people would push us and get us started.

Yesterday was an exciting day for us for we had company from Yale.  The school has been trying to find another man to teach philosophy and has been writing to this man for months.  He came for an interview yesterday so B was busy all day.  They were here at the house in early afternoon after having lunch at school and then had supper here.  He had to go back to N. Haven last night for his wife is expecting a baby any minute and they have two others.  It was wonderful to talk to someone about all our friends and Yale and he didn't stay half long enough.  They hired him and he'll be back in September.

We have more hopes of getting the house I mentioned last week and want to go see it today.  The woman who lives there called me one day to talk about it and tell me the good and bad parts about it.

Thanks for B's candy.  It's all gone now but we enjoyed it.  He got a shirt from his folks and there is another package here now we he's already had a nice birthday.  Weldon Watterson's birthday is Thurs. so we'll have a big dinner for both boys on Tuesday.

I had to stop and then B came and we went to Bloomington.  I bought a navy crepe dress--practical kind, but didn't find a hat.  In fact, I didn't have time to look.  There is a Faculty Wives dinner meeting next Fri. night and I'd like to find a hat before then.  I ordered a topper out of the New York Times and can't wait to see it.  It is coral corduroy.  I needed something to wear when Bobby plays out and something lightweight so I thought that would work fine.

Thanks for the nice Easter egg.  It will go in Bobby's bank.

Toni gave me a permanent this week and I sure look better.  Bobby and I have been wearing our new coats and like them fine.  His is too big but will do and will be just right next fall.

Hope you are all fine."

April 16, 1949 The Fork, The Jacket, The Coat, The House and The Doughnuts

B's Mother

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Tomorrow should be a nice Easter from the way it looks now, but we have had a good sized snow and it was real cold yesterday.  We haven't made any plans for tomorrow so I don't know that it will be any different from any other day.  I hope you have a nice day.

B and Bobby have gone to the grocery store and I've been cleaning a little bit.  We have had such a nice vacation week and yet haven't done much either--mostly what we wanted to do.  For our anniversary we bought iced tea spoons and a knife, fork & spoon for Bobby.  He manages the fork pretty well.

Stepped-up, post-war production made the First Love silver readily available again.

I finally finished my jacket and meant to have it steam pressed but haven't taken it yet for it poured rain Thurs. and snowed hard all day yesterday.  Bobby's coat is almost done, too.  I'm still crocheting on the tablecloth edging.  But I want to finish it before I do any more sewing.

Our dinner party was very successful.  I think everyone enjoyed it.

We have a lead on another house.  This one belongs to the college and is rented only to college people.  It is located on a lot where they plan to put a school building one of these days so will be torn down sometime.  So it looks pretty bad for they won't do any work on those houses.  I don't know what the inside is like but the outside is dirty and needs paint.  Faculty people live there now so I guess it is livable and I know it would look better if the yard was cleaned up.  It wouldn't be anything like we now have but would be a place to live and maybe we can buy one of these days.

I guess you knew B's mother has been real sick again.  We almost came home after we got a letter from his dad but B telephoned Rosalynn and since his mother was lots better we didn't think we needed to come.

Why don't you put a white pique collar and cuffs on your gray dress?  Maybe that would help.  Or add a red bow at the neck.

We got Bobby a plush rabbit for Easter and let him have it when we bought it.  He has loved and loved it and takes it to bed with him.

I made some doughnuts last night and we had them and coffee with Wattersons about 8:00.  They were the raised kind but are heavy as lead and tough--but taste good.  It took all day for the dough to rise but they aren't light at all.

It is close to lunch time and my boys will be hungry so I'll stop for now."

              Lots of love,

                     B, Bonnie & Bobby

April 9, 1949 Oats and Cinders, Fancy Entertaining and This Wonderful Day

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Tomorrow night we're having another dinner party so we've been thinking about that all week and getting ready for it.  Toni and I went shopping for groceries today so there shouldn't be too much to do tomorrow.

I finally finished the gray skirt and vest and plan to wear it tomorrow night with the yellow blouse that I had to make over.  The whole suit seems to be jinxed I had so much trouble with it but it is real pretty.  I didn't plan to make the vest but it was part of the pattern and I had enough material so I made it.

Monday night we went to school to hear John Mason Brown review some new plays and books.  He is a famous literary critic and I know you have read some of his writing.

Bobby is fine and has really been "feeling his oats".  The minute he wakes up he wants to go bye bye.  He has so much fun outside but we have to watch him constantly because he eats anything and everything.  He chews up cinders like they were popcorn.  I guess he is going to stick to one nap a day.  He rests in the crib for awhile each morning which gives me a chance to clean up and dress.  Then he sleeps his two hour in the afternoon.  We really have to do fancy entertaining sometimes while he eats lunch for he gets so sleepy but soon peps up after he eats.

I had to give up writing last night for I couldn't think of anything to say.  Your letter came this morning and I'm sorry you are so tired.  I hope you got your package.  It was such a little one but was sent with lots of love.

I had no idea Beulah was even thinking of moving again.  I am glad.  I am really ashamed that I haven't written to her.

When in June do you have Circle?  We plan to come home June 14 for four or five days.  Maybe I could help you if it is that week.  One of these days I'll price the gold band china if I'm where I can.

Well, there just isn't anything to write.  Hope you are both fine this wonderful day."

                 Lots & Lots of love,

                         B, Bonnie & Bobby

NOTES from Ann:  John Mason Brown was an American literary critic, writer for the New York Post and one of the original nine members of the New York Drama Critics Circle.  Controversial in the 30s for its disagreement with the Pulitzer board over prize winners, it is still active today.  For a thorough history:  http://www.dramacritics.org/dc_history.html

April 2, 1949 Such a Beautiful Day, Giggling Like Everything and The Beautiful Voice

Bonnie's Mother, Summer 1948
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Such a beautiful day but quite chilly.  We made a little trip to Minonk, Ill. this morning and enjoyed it so much.  There is a clothing factory there and we went to see what they had in coats and suits.  Neither of us found anything we wanted although there were some nice things and it was such a nice day for a ride.  B needs a spring suit and I haven't decided what I'll get new.  I'm still struggling with the skirt and jacket.  I thought the skirt was almost done till I realized it was too small.  Now I think I have it fitted all right.  And can soon finish it.  The jacket still doesn't fit.  I can hardly write for watching B and Bobby.  They are playing on the floor and are giggling like everything.

Lynn & Bobby and the safety gate!
Bobby has two more teeth and now there are only two more to go and he'll have all his baby teeth.  He is still getting up early but has been sleeping over two hours every afternoon.  I think the one long nap is better than two short ones.  I've been getting more done and it saves running up the steps a few times.

Our dinner party was nice and we've planned another one next Sat. night.  It will be in our apartment so will be more work for me than the last one.

We went to a concert at school Thurs. night.  It was a negro baritone and he had such a beautiful voice.  The house was packed and they wouldn't let him stop singing.  Finally he sang the "Crucifixion" and asked that we not applaud.  I've never been in such a quiet place in my life as that room was as he sang.  It was like church.

I have only 8 place settings of my china.  That's why I got excited when I thought I couldn't get more of it.  I didn't ask about Haviland prices but if you'll come to see us we'll go find out.  I couldn't get your salt and peppers.  They were out of them but will have them later, so I'll get them when I see them.

I hope you have a nice birthday, Mother, and Bobby sends you a big hug and kiss.

I must stop and take Bobby to bed for his nap.  He has been so good today."

                Lots & lots of love,

                       B, Bonnie & Bobby

March 26, 1949 The Baby Goes Wild, The Scribbling, The Dinner Party, The Alterations, Green Beans Almond, Coconut Sweet Potato Casserole and Easter Macaroons

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"A rainy, gloomy day but it's warm.  We haven't kept fires for several days--just enough once in awhile.  B is building a fire now and it's mid-afternoon.  Bobby is watching him from the playpen.  We put it in the basement and he stays in it while we do things down there.

Bobby has been fine only gets up so early and has been waking in the middle of the night feeling fit and ready to play.  We think he's sleeping too much in the daytime and the last two days he's taken only one nap so maybe he's making another change.  You never can tell what it is for they change so often.

We have had such wonderful days and I've been letting Bobby run on the sidewalk.  He just goes wild when he gets out of the stroller.  I take him to the campus and turn him loose.  He picks up sticks and leaves and talks to all the students that come along.  They all talk to him and call him "Butch".  Bobby is just learning to ride the horse he got for Christmas but still likes for us to push him.  I guess he'll have to have a small tricycle this summer.

The club which B sponsors at school is having its annual contest with another club tonight.  They are the oldest clubs on campus and each year have held this contest except during the Civil War years.  (Bobby is on/ my lap wit/h a red penci_l).  Their program is speech, singing and music.  They hire a judge and give prizes.  We will go see how it is.  I was invited to a luncheon today but B had to help the students.

We're having a dinner tomorrow night so we couldn't go to an "At Home" tomorrow afternoon either.  And then B's Aunt Ione in Peoria called and wanted us to come there for dinner Sunday.  We couldn't go of course so it seems we're having our dinner at the wrong time.  There will be 14 of us so we're moving our drop leaf table to Watterson's because it's easier to move than theirs.  Tony will take care of one table and I the other.  We're having baked ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, pineapple cheese salad, brick ice cream topped with a coconut cookie and coffee.  Everything is to be on an Easter theme.  The cookie is a macaroon shaped like a nest with jelly bean eggs in it.  Our centerpieces are Easter baskets and our place cards are paper eggs.  The main color is yellow.  We bought our baskets in the dime store.  They had such pretty ones.

My housecoat is all done but the button holes.  It made a pretty housecoat and I think I'll make a brunch coat off the same pattern later.  The jacket I'm making is made from a tweed jacket B had but I'm discouraged with it.  It's so hard to fit and I have such bits of time to work at it.  I'll keep at it though and get it finished.  Then I got some grey wool for a skirt to go with it and got it too little.  There is a big kick pleat in the center back and it turned right out so I'm going to take the band off and make the pleat smaller.  There is plenty of material to work with.  I haven't even touched Bobby's coat and he's going to need it soon, but it won't take long to make.  The table cloth is ready for the edging.  I'll have to follow direction for that so it will go slowly at first.

We'll soon have another anniversary.  We ordered the rest of our china some time ago in hopes of getting it for our anniversary but they said they couldn't say when we would get it for they haven't started making it again but they will, so our order stands and maybe we'll have it next year.  It hadn't gone up much in price.  So we're going to buy the rest of our silver.  It won't be much--iced tea spoons and a few odd pieces.  We're going to get Bobby a small knife, fork and spoon, too.  Haviland gold band dishes are available again but I didn't ask the price or anything about it for I was a bit disturbed about my dishes when I was in the store.  I had first been told that I could get my dishes, then that I couldn't then I went down to the store (the other talks had been by phone) to find out for sure.  Now I know I will get them one of these days.

I can't find your letter so I don't know whether you asked anything or not.

Hope you're all fine."

            Lots of love,

                     B, Bonnie & Bobby

B and the students of the Philadelphian Literary Society.  The explanation of the club's activities from the yearbook follows:

"The oldest organization on campus, having been formed in 1858, the Philadelphian Literary Society continues to offer its members an outlet for the furtherance of their literary and musical interests and abilities.  The year was marked by the formal initiation of the new members in the fall, by a concession at the Annual Women's League Carnival, and by numerous parties.  A variety of different programs were presented by the members at each meeting.  Highlight of the year, however, was the 88th annual Phil-Wright contest held in Capen Auditorium on March 26.  "Phils" turned out in full battle regalia for the affair, consisting of a vocal solo, oration, piano solo, dramatic reading and an ensemble. " (Index, 1949)

Bonnie's Easy Green Beans Almond

Wash and trim if needed, 2 lbs. green beans.  Blanch briefly in a small amount of salted, boiling water.  Test for desired crispness, lower heat and cook until done.  Drain.  Add 1/2 c. toasted slivered almonds, 1/2 c. butter and 1/2 tsp. salt.  Serve immediately.

Coconut Sweet Potato Casserole (Serves 8, easily doubles)

Cook, peel and cube 2 lbs. sweet potatoes.  Put in a buttered baking dish.  Mix together 2/3 c. maple syrup, 1/4 c. butter, melted and 1/2 tsp. salt.  Peel 2 apples and slice paper thin.  Layer apples over potatoes and pour mixture over both.  Sprinkle on 2/3 c. coconut.  Bake at 350 for 30 min. covered.  Then bake uncovered for an additional 30 min. till apples are tender and coconut is browned.

Easter Macaroons

Stir together and mix well 2/3 c. sugar, 1/4 c. flour, 1/4 tsp. salt, 4 egg whites, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 c. finely chopped almonds and 2-2/3 c. shredded coconut.  Drop by full tsp. on greased cookie sheet.  Bake @ 325 for about 20-25 min.  Edges will be golden when done, and the top will be light brown.  While still hot, quickly push in edges of cookies to make nests and top with 2 or 3 jelly beans then remove from sheet immediately.

March 19, 1949 The New Shoes, The Old Tablecloth, The Circus, The Standstill and The Disappointment

Walking carefully in new shoes
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Yesterday was Bobby's birthday and it hardly seems possible that he could be fourteen months old.  We put his new shoes on him for the first time and he was so proud.  He loves his shoes and always has but I never saw him notice them so long.  He talked about them and looked and looked at them before he even took a stop in them.  Then he walked so carefully.  He has been waking between 5:30 and 6:00 every morning and wants to get up.  He won't stay in his crib and play nor stay in bed with us so we have to get up.  There isn't much I can do that early in the morning so I crochet while he plays.  As a result, the tablecloth is almost done--just three blocks and the edge.  I add one block most every day.  It will soon be done and the blocking will be the big job.  There are curtain stretchers here so I'll use those.

I haven't accomplished much this week.  Monday night I went to the Ladies Aid of the Christian Church.  It was being held at the home of one of my friends (a faculty wife) and she invited me.  It was just like any Ladies Aid and I enjoyed meeting new people.  I think I told you we were going to a dinner at school Wed. night and one tonight.  Last night we went to the circus at school.  The students (physical ed. students) are really good and three of them are professional performers.  Two are girls that travel with station WSM shows and the boy works with Cole Bros. circus in the summer.  There is a winter colony of circus people here every year.  They live in trailers in a camp.  The college circus is a yearly affair and several students have developed into big show performers after their start in the school circus.

My sewing is at a standstill since I haven't been home much this week.  The jacket is almost ready for the lining and I have it and the skirt cut out.

Of course, we were disappointed about the house but have a lead on a first floor flat which would be better than the house since it would be on one floor.  We haven't seen the flat but the house looks nice from the outside.  It seems like things have always turned out right in the end for us so we may be glad we didn't get the house.  There is still lots of time and we don't want to have to pay rent on two places any longer than is necessary.

Have you heard from Buddy lately?  B's dad is planning to go to Barnes for treatment and B might go down to see him if he's there over a week-end.  I don't know whether I'd go or not but if Buddy was better and things were going well I might.

Bobby still eats at his own table and eats everything.  He loves to sit in the kitchen chairs but is so wiggly that he can't be left in one.  He can't get in one alone but is gradually learning to climb into the different chairs.  He is so tall you won't know him.

You are really having the winter.  It's cold but sunny here with a few snow flakes every few days which don't last.  Both of you be careful on the ice.  So many have been hurt this winter.

Don't wear yourself out, Mother.  I know you have to work at Aunt Cliffie's but rest when you get home even if you have to let your work go."

             Lots of love,

                   B, Bonnie & Bobby

NOTE from Ann:  Attending the Gamma Phi Circus was an annual family affair growing up and we loved it...until one year a clown climbed onto the bleachers and cut off the necktie of the man sitting next to me!  It scared me to death and for the remainder of my childhood, I never felt the same way about the circus, or clowns.  Fortunately, the athletes were always fabulous.

March 12, 1949 Appreciating Sunshine and Aprons, Cured With A Perm, Invited to the PTA and Answering Xmas Letters

Warm enough?
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Another beautiful day but it is cold.  I really appreciate the sunshine.  I'm glad we didn't get any of that snow that you had.

Yes, I have the new Journal and will send it to you as soon as I read it and Tony always reads it, too, so it may be quite a while.

I sent Grandma a card and wrote a letter.  Isn't it amazing that she can be so old?

Yes, I got the aprons from Beulah and appreciated them.  I guess she remembered what I said about wanting some more like that but didn't want to make them.  I have six now and that's plenty.

The dressing I had was made just like you make it but I guess I wasn't careful about keeping it in the refrigerator all the time.  We sure were sick and so weak for several days.  I read later that dressing was one of the easiest things to spoil and cause ptomaine.

Bobby is fine and feels better now.  The other stomach tooth is through and his appetite has picked up again.  He never did stop eating but didn't want as much as usual.  Now he wants to taste everything we start to eat.  We gave him a bit of dill pickle the other day and he wanted it so he shivered and chewed it up.  We laughed and laughed.  Foods don't seem to bother him now at all and he can even eat peas and green beans.

We think we'll be home in June.  B has some Easter vacation but we can't come both times so we think June would be better.

After looking all over Bloomington for me some shoes I came home and ordered some from Wards.  They came this morning and are fine.  B ordered some too but they didn't come with mine and we got some for Bobby here at the Wards stores.  They couldn't fit me.

We had a scare this week.  Lynn fell off the coffee table and hit her head on the frame of the couch.  She cried but seemed all right for about two hours.  Then she began to vomit.  The fall may not have caused her to be sick for she's cutting teeth and she was all right the next day but we were scared enough to call the doctor.  We gave her a permanent and she looks so cute.

Tony and I went to a PTA meeting.  We enjoyed it and even if Bobby doesn't go to school, I hope they ask us again.

We are invited to two dinners this week.  One is being given by Gladys's friend and another woman.  The other dinner is at the Home Management house at school.  It is a two-apartment house where Home Economics majors live for a year.  They have to run it like it was their home--do all the cooking, cleaning, shopping and all.  They have to entertain so many times and this is the first time we have gone.

The house we wanted has been rented so we'll have to look somewhere else.  Friends of ours got it and they haven't any children.  Maybe that helped them get it.

Tell Beulah I'll write one of these days.  I'm still trying to answer Xmas letters."

                 Lots of love,

                       B, Bonnie & Bobby

March 7, 1949 The Bad Dressing, The Nice Birthday, The Wonderful Weather and The Church

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"I'm sorry this is late but I couldn't write yesterday for I ate some dressing that made me sick.  We had baked chicken and dressing for my birthday dinner on Tuesday and then B ate some warmed over dressing Wed. evening for supper.  He got sick in the night and was sick all day Thursday.  We thought it was a virus infection of some kind for there have been some around.  I ate the rest of the dressing at supper Friday and got sick in the night and was sick all day yesterday.  We felt the same way so we're pretty sure it was the dressing.  I'm all right today only weak and my joints ache.

I had a real nice birthday.  B gave me a box of candy, a little scatter pin, some money and some earrings.  I think I"ll buy some oxfords with the money.  Thanks for the dress.  I don't know how I'll make it yet, but want to get a pretty pattern for a summer dress.  I have lots of sewing to do but can't seem to get started.  I sewed on my housecoat this week and made a blouse over.  You remember I made a yellow blouse not long ago.  It had a high, round neck with gathers in front.  The neck didn't fit and the material was too stiff for gathers so I put tucks in front in place of gathers and fitted the neck.  It looks much better.  When I get the housecoat done I'm going to make Bobby's spring coat.  I have a piece of brown tweed for it.  It's amazing how much Bobby has grown since I made the brown coat last fall.  It's hip length on him now and the sleeves are too short.  They can be let out, though, so he can still wear it.

We have had such wonderful weather this week--up in the 50s and 60s.  Conn. just had a big snowstorm.  Thank heavens, we aren't there.  Tony and I went shopping one afternoon and I looked for my shoes but didn't find them.  B was going to go with me Sat. but of course we couldn't.  I need them badly so maybe I can go to town this week.

Bobby has been so good since the tooth got through.  I wish you could see him for he is so funny and does so many things.

We have met some people here that are friends of Gladys and Bill Halter.  They are faculty people and seem real nice.

I went to church last Sunday and enjoyed it.  The University Christian Church is about 1/2 block from our house and I went there.

I'm sorry Daddy has so many "babies" to take care of so you can't come to see us.  Maybe you can come later."

            Lots of love,

                    B, Bonnie & Bobby

NOTE from Ann:  The University Christian Church became our family church and B & Bonnie were members for 50 years.  The church was recently demolished for new development in downtown Normal.  (Image courtesy of McLean Co. Museum)

February 26, 1949 Cross, Cranky, Fussy, Fluffy Potato Salad, Korean Green Salad and Velvety Custard Pie

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"I think Bobby is asleep so I'd better write while I have the chance.  He has been cross as a bear the last three days.  I've never seen him so cranky but an eye tooth is about ready to pop through and I guess it hurts.  He has slept fine at night but can't sleep long in the daytime and he gets so tired.  That makes things worse.  He did finally take a long nap yesterday afternoon and was real good afterwards, but he is still gritting his teeth and won't let us touch his gums.  This is the most trouble he has had so I shouldn't complain.  This will be 13 teeth and Lynn still has 7.  He is outgrowing her, too, but she will probably always be little.

With Bobby so fussy I haven't accomplished much this week.  We had our dinner party Monday night and had a real nice time.  The centerpiece is always my problem but I finally used my ivy (the one you shipped) in a white, flat pot and dark green candles.  It looked pretty.  We are having 4 more people for supper tomorrow night.  We're going to have a simpler supper so it won't be so much trouble--hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans, a green salad, pie & coffee.  Tony and I are going to have some big parties together to take care of the rest of our obligations as well as to entertain a few people that we want to ask besides the others.

I had a letter from Grandma this morning.  Poor old thing has certainly gotten more feeble the last six months.  She doesn't write so well and tells the same thing over and over.  She realizes it, too.  I was so pleased to have it for I know it is such an effort for her to write.  She'll be 89 the 10th of March, won't she?

I haven't heard from Buddy and Bessie since January so didn't know about their new car.  I'm certainly glad for them and wish we had one too.  That will have to wait till we get settled in the fall so we see what we have to do.  Then if we don't have to buy a house maybe we can get a car before long.

Buddy & Bessie, Francis Jr., Roger & Marjorie

We haven't heard anymore about the house we want.  The people still don't know when they can move.  Tony and I went to see her the other afternoon and I really like the looks of the house.  The rooms aren't big and wouldn't take much to furnish it--course I didn't see anything but the living room and dining room.

The wives of the men in the Education dept. have started a little club.  We meet once a month for lunch in one of the homes.  We each take sandwiches and the hostess serves dessert and coffee.  After lunch we talk and sew.  I went this week and enjoyed it so much.  B put Bobby to bed and Tony took him up and kept him till I got home.  He was good as could be.

Are you going to get anything new for spring?  Why don't you get on the train and come to see us, then we can shop in Bloomington?  All the stores are advertising spring things now.

Hope you both are fine."

            Lots of love,

                  B, Bonnie & Bobby

Fluffy Potato Salad

Prepare 4-5 cups of mashed potatoes.  Cool completely and add 1/4 c. mayonnaise, 1/4 c. sour cream, 2 T prepared yellow mustard, 1/2 c. chopped celery, 3 chopped hard boiled eggs and 3 T chopped scallions.  Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.  Mix thoroughly and chill completely.

Korean Green Salad

Wash, dry and tear spinach and any other greens you choose  to make about 6-8 cups.  Prepare the dressing:  1 T rice vinegar, 1 tsp. sesame oil, 1 T toasted sesame seeds, 1 tsp. soy sauce, 1/2 tsp. salt, 2 cloves garlic, minced, 2 green onions, thinly sliced, 1/4 tsp. red pepper and 1 tsp. sugar.  Mix and shake well.   Increase the amount of dressing if adding firmer greens vegetables such as cabbage.  Toss at the last minute and add extra toasted sesame seeds if desired.

Velvety Custard Pie

Preheat oven to 475.  Mix thoroughly 4 beaten eggs, 1/2 c. sugar, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. vanilla and 2-1/2 c. warmed milk.  Pour into unbaked crust and bake at 475 for 5 min.  Reduce heat to 425 and bake 20 min. or till knife comes out clean.  (Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, if desired.)  Cool completely and serve with fresh berries or chocolate sauce.

February 19, 1949 Cleaned, Mopped and Waxed, Sheared and Itch-Free and The Change of Scenery

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"The day is almost gone and I'm just getting around to this.  We've worked like everything today and finally got the upstairs all cleaned and the kitchen mopped and waxed.  We have invited four people for a little dinner party Monday night so I want to get the house fairly clean this weekend.

Bobby had a birthday yesterday and got his first haircut today.  Tony cut it and he was good as could be and really looks like a boy now.  His hair was getting shaggy around the back and it made his ears itch.

Tonight we are going to a party at school and Tony is going to a dinner party so we are having a baby sitter together.

I had a letter from Edith Swann in New Britain this week.  It was 10 pages and she really told all the news.  We really enjoyed it.  We also had a letter from B's Aunt Ione that lives up by Peoria.  They were asking us to come up so we plan to go some Sunday.

Edith
Seems like I haven't done much this week.  I still haven't sewed any on my housecoat.  We went to the show one night and by the time I wash and iron the week is practically gone.

We've had two wonderful spring days.  They say it is getting colder, though, so I guess we'll still have winter.

No, I never hear Lonnie Ross but I'll listen if you tell me when he's on.  I just happened to hear the Breakfast Club one morning this week and they had a 11 year old that could really sing.

Tony and I took the kids and went to town one afternoon.  We put the strollers behind the seat and then don't have to carry the babies.  They were good as could be and probably enjoyed the change of scenery as much as we did.

It's getting late and we have to take the children for a walk or they will raise Cain so bye for now."

         Lots of love,

            B, Bonnie & Bobby

NOTE from Ann:  The Breakfast Club was a popular radio program which first began in the early 30's  and was aired on live TV in 1948.  To see a clip:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ1gamhoH6k

B's Aunt Ione began painting in oils late in life.  The painting above, "Almond Blossoms", was done in 1971 at 79 years of age.

February 12, 1949 Intrigue in the Richland Post Office, A Date for Supper, A Thorough Cleaning and Time for Lunch

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Your letter was newsier than the "Mirror" this week.  Things have really been happening, haven't they?  Did you ever learn just what happened in the post office?

Bobby is sleeping but I haven't done much--made the bed, washed the dishes and added another block to my tablecloth.  I crochet every spare minute (which aren't many) for I can see the end of the tablecloth now--only 16 blocks and the edge.  I would like to finish it this winter so have been neglecting other things.  I think it's about time I finished it for I started it the first winter in Conn.

Yesterday I went to the dentist and he x-rayed and I have 3 or 4 cavities to fill so will be going for awhile.  He said my teeth were in pretty good condition and that my porcelain cap was really a good job.  He said I had some good work in my mouth and then added that there was some poor too (that is the dentist from long back).

We got along fine last Saturday with both babies.  They were so good and Bobby thought it was awfully funny for Lynn to eat supper with him.  Wattersons came home just as I was putting Bobby to bed so I didn't have to put Lynn to bed.  They brought me a big bunch of the flowers from the wedding.  It was a big affair--white satin and all.

B has gone to get his hair cut.  Seems like this has been such a busy week.  There were several meetings at school and he went to Pontiac, Ill. to talk to a group of teachers.  He was pleased with the way it went and relieved to have it over.

I have still been cleaning a little.  I finally got our bedroom cleaned from top to bottom and clean curtains up.  They won't stay clean long, though, for Bobby likes to play peek-a-boo behind them.  That's all right with me, though.

Spring clothes are being shown now--lots of suits with contrasting jackets on trimming.  I finally cut my housecoat but haven't sewed a bit on it.

I'll have to go fix lunch or Bobby will eat the whole box of crackers."

           Lots of love,

                   B, Bonnie & Bobby

NOTE from Ann:  Anyone who knew Bonnie knows that "Have a cracker!" was the standard reply to any question regarding the timing or content of a meal.

In the news, Eleanor Roosevelt's  My Day entry summarized her visit to St. Louis to a Women's Optimist Club meeting in which she was to judge worthwhile community projects.  Bonnie would love to have seen her.  For the full text of the winning proposal:  http://www.gwu.edu/~erpapers/myday/displaydoc.cfm?_y=1949&_f=md001201

February 5, 1949 The Beautiful Day, The Yelling, The Running, The Laughing and A Picnic

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It's a beautiful day even if there is a good-sized snow on the ground.  I'm thankful the ice is finally gone there.  It is so dangerous and maybe you can go someplace now.

Bobby has been so good all week that I've gotten more things done than I have in a long time.  He seems to feel so good for he runs and laughs all the time.  Now that he walks so well, he is beginning to talk more.  For a while he didn't seem to even try.  I wish you could have seen him at supper last night.  He had started to eat when I took some cheese out of the refrigerator.  He saw it and squealed "cheese" and began to reach.  He wouldn't eat anything else till it was all gone.  No matter how big a piece I gave him he'd stuff it all in his mouth and yell "cheese".

I've been trying to wash curtains too.  I just hate soft coal and cooking with gas makes sticky, black dirt on curtains too.

My fingernail finally came off.  It is growing fast and hasn't given me any trouble.  The undernail is so soft that it turns back easily so I keep it taped part of the time.  I didn't even know when the nail came off.

The Wattersons have gone to a wedding so we have Lynn for the afternoon.  She is asleep now and we're wondering what will happen when she discovers they are gone.

The babies are awake so I probably can't write anymore.  I'm glad Jerry is better.  I must write to Beulah soon.  How are your glasses?  Are Daddy's headaches gone?

Wish you could sit and watch these babies.  It's a picnic."

           Lots of love,

               B, Bonnie & Bobby

January 29, 1949 The Heavy Ice, The Big Sales, The Thick 'n Thin and The Need to Entertain

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"You must really be having terrible weather.  We have had a tiny bit of snow and enough ice that some country schools have been closed and buses don't always run but it hasn't seemed bad to us.  Maybe it doesn't seem bad to us because of the awful winters we are used to.  The ice did get so heavy on the trees and wires that we expected the lights to go out one night but it started pouring rain and that took it off.

Yesterday was a big sales day downtown so B went down in the morning and found a pair of pants.  I went in the afternoon and found a tan blouse and a rose colored dress.  The dress has to have work done on it before I can wear it though.  The waist is long and the hem has to be evened.  I made a yellow blouse this week to wear with my brown skirt but am a little disappointed in it.  The material is too heavy for the pattern I used--gathered high neck and long full sleeves.  Maybe it will soften after it is washed.  It is "thick 'n thin"--much like shantung but stiffer.

The little suit that Beulah sent Bobby for his birthday is so cute and fits perfectly.  He looked so sweet that we took color pictures of him in it.  It is dirty now and ready to be washed.

A Baby-Tenda, available on ebay
This was exam week and has been a busy one.  The students came two nights and I worked on my blouse the other evenings.  B has worked on grades most of the time and has written one article for a school magazine today.  Bobby has been so good although he was up at 6:15 this morning and had only a short nap this afternoon.  He stayed in the Baby-Tenda while I did most of the laundry.

I'll be so glad when Bobby gets all his teeth.  He has another upper one and the Dr. says he is cutting the eye and stomach teeth.  They bother him so very little but make him wakeful sometimes.   I guess that is what makes him wake in the middle of the night.  The doctor said he was developing as perfectly as we could make him and that he seems to be in perfect health.  He didn't vaccinate him because he said there was too much danger of sore throats, colds, etc. now.  He will do it in the spring.  Our doctor is not Toni's doctor although they are in the same office.  Bobby weighs 25 lbs. 6 oz. and is 30-1/2 in. tall.

No, we don't know any more about the house.  The people aren't going for at least three months so there is still a chance.  We heard about another house owned by the same man but when I saw the outside of it I didn't want it.  It needed repair badly.

We are going to Watterson's for dinner tonight.  It's to be a big party--14.  I guess I enjoy the dinner parties here as well as in Conn. only they are usually so big.  I'm going to have to start having some.  We owe 22 people now.

Yes, we have heard from Eleanor Rollins but her arthritis is no better.  She has been going to a Dr. in New York but he doesn't help her any.

I hope you and Daddy are all right.  Be careful on the ice."

            Lots of love,

                 B, Bonnie & Bobby

January 22, 1949 The Haul, The Cake, The Ball, Don't Send Eggs and Be Careful on the Ice

A ball for Lynn
 Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Bobby really made a haul this birthday.  I'm so glad he got some money for he doesn't really need anything now.  He had almost enough money in his bank for a bond so we're going to add a little to that to buy the first one and save his birthday money toward another one.  Lynn gave him a pair of sox.  I baked an angel cake and decorated it and put a big candle in the center.  After the babies naps we and the Wattersons had a little party.  I wish you could have seen the little ones go after the cake.  We took pictures of them and they're pretty good.  We put the cake on an end table and let Bobby and Lynn have it.  Lynn picked off tiny pieces of decoration and ate it but Bobby took big handfuls of cake--ate some and threw down the rest.  After the mess was partly cleaned up we all had cake.  Today Lynn is a year and we have a ball for her.  I don't know how we'll manage the party for we have to take Bobby for his examination this afternoon.  I'm anxious to see what he weighs.  We expect him to get the smallpox vaccination and I dread the next two weeks if he does.  Lynn did fine with hers--had about two cranky days and her arm looks pretty good.

This has been a busy week.  Bobby has been getting up between 5 and 6 and that makes the day so long.

We've been to two dinner parties and had students here for a party.  We're having students twice this next week and that will be all till next semester.  We do enjoy them and they have fun.

I had a card from Beulah.  You must have had a terrible storm.  We have ice and a little snow but it isn't bad.

We still have a few eggs.  Bobby won't eat but one now so they last longer.  No, I don't think we want you to send us eggs.  The little that it saves isn't worth the trouble.

I hope you have lights and a phone now.  It is sort of hard to get along without either.  Be careful on the ice.  So many people get hurt badly when they fall."

             Lots of love,

                    B, Bonnie & Bobby

January 15, 1949 Number 11, The Dollar, The Big Time, The Dress Neck and The Other Man of the Year

Happy Birthday, Bobby!
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"We have had ice too but no damage to wires here in Normal.  Today is like spring again for it's 60 outside.

The card is so cute and thanks for the dollar.  We put it in Bobby's bank and plan to add enough to his money to buy a bond for his birthday.  I want to make an angel cake for him for he likes that and can eat it.  The tooth is through now (11) and he walks everywhere.

Seems like there has been a lot going on this week and yet I haven't accomplished much.  There is a lot going on at school.  B went to Pontiac, Ill. to a meeting yesterday and has to go again soon to give a talk.  He judged debates this morning.  There is a tournament at school today.  We're invited to a dinner party tonight.  I finally got the dress neck fixed on my black dress so will wear that.  I still haven't cut my brunch coat but I bought a new pattern for it.

Toni and I took the babies and went shopping Monday.  We put the strollers in the car and all of us had a big time.  I bought some everyday shoes that were on sale.

We had a group of students in Thurs. evening and plan to have more next week.

There just isn't any news so will stop for now."

             Lots of love,

                    B, Bonnie & Bobby

On campus waiting for the dinner to begin.

January 8, 1949 Walks, Sits Down Hard and Pushes Furniture

Harry is Man of the Year, 1949
Dear Mother & Daddy,

"It's spring-like here but the weatherman is warning us that cold and snow are on the way.  This fall and winter have certainly been an improvement over last year.  B has been washing windows and we put up clean curtains in the living room.  I want to wash the dining room curtains soon.  They get so black with this awful soft coal.

Bobby has been cranky the last two days but another molar (an upper one) is trying to come through and I guess that hurts.  He walks everywhere and crawls very little now.   He sits down pretty hard sometimes but just gets up and goes on.  The little horse gets pushed all over (as well as the furniture) but he still can't push it with his feet.

Bobby was really glad to see Lynn when we got home after Christmas.  The toys were all over the floor and she was so excited about them that she didn't pay much attention to him.

We have had several letters from friends in New Britain and there have been so many changes at the college it wouldn't be the same place.  Dr. Wampler (head of the department) has retired and gone to Florida.

There just isn't anything to write.  I hope you are all fine."

                Lots of love,

                  B, Bonnie & Bobby

NOTE from Ann:  Although Truman began his State of the Union address on Jan. 5, 1949 with "the state of the union is good", he also cited America's shortcomings, many of which are the same today.  http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=13293#axzz1yGsFUjHO   The speech is commonly referred to as Truman's "Fair Deal" address in which he promises Americans the right to a fair deal from the government in many areas.  Of his proposals, only 3 were implemented by the end of the 1950 congressional year; a raise in the minimum wage, increases in public housing programs and expansion of Social Security.

A feature in Life magazine highlighted Truman's controversial opinions and comments about his foreign policy regarding Russia.  See below.
