March 7, 1953 The Blustery Birthday, The Colds and Sore Throats, A Lot to Learn, So Good Night

Some of Bonnie's watercolors and her paintbox

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"Thanks a lot for the nice birthday present.  You shouldn't have sent that much, though.  I'm still looking for material for my coat but plan to get beige, I think.  Then I'll probably get black patent leather shoes.  I finally finished my suit I've worked on so long.  It looks real nice and I'm pleased with the way it turned out.  I've still got a lot of sewing piled up but no time to do it.

My birthday was cold and blustery so we stayed in most of the day, then went to the zoo for a little bit and ate supper out.  It was nice to get to stay in and have a quiet day without company.  We have so little time by ourselves.

The children have colds again.  Bob seems to have one constantly now.  I feel good except for my throat.  It seems to have a sore spot and I get hoarse when I get tired.  I can't sing very well either.  I feel so silly when I try to sing to Ann.  I do hope you can escape the flu for it really is terrible.

I sent Maxine a card.  Perhaps she told you.

How did your permanent turn out?  Did Beulah have any trouble with it?  We've tried to give Toni one for two weeks but can't find a time so are going to try to sometime next week.

I have a lot to learn in my painting class but maybe by the end of the term I can do a little painting.  I know so little about it but have a good teacher & hope he can get me on the right track.

I'm so glad you are better, Mother.  Even a little better is something.  Let's hope this doctor can help you.

It is bedtime so good night to you both and take care of yourselves."

                     Lots of love,

                           Bonnie

  1. Yesterday Tony and I went on a long drive through some of the surrounding communities and stretches of mountain roads around us to soak up autumn's resplendent gorgeousness (as best we could with the rain and sleet was coming and going all afternoon), and seeing the unmatched splendor of nature this time of year made me wish once again that I had the tiniest scrap of talent as a painter and could recreate on canvas the beauty of the landscape around us. I wish I'd been blessed to have B's skill with watercolour! :)

  2. Oh Ann I'm a painter too albeit an amateur one. I have dabbled with watercolours and acrylics most of my life.
