December 10, 1949 The Decade's Last Letter, Home for the Holidays, The Nicest Affair and McCall's Christmas Cookie Recipes

McCalls, December. 1949 (Recipes below)
Dear Mother, Daddy & Grandma,

"We'll soon be heading home if the weather is O.K.  We will stay at B's so you decide what day we can be together at your house.  You and Beulah decide on the day and then you tell B's mother that we'll have that day with you so she will know when to plan her Xmas.  Rosalynn's girls won't be home so I don't know what they all plan, but since we're staying there we'll be with you Xmas day or whichever day you want to have the tree.  The fruitcake is all baked and stored away.  The other cake is all gone.  It was good but so rich I could hardly eat it.  You have to cut it in such small pieces and because of the richness it lasts a long time but it certainly isn't worth the trouble.  B had a committee meeting here Mon. night and I served that with whipped cream.  Everyone thought it was good.

We have a snow on and it's good and messy so we're going to have to get boots for Bobby.

I'm sure Bobby would enjoy a chair but don't worry too much about it if you can't find one.  He loves dolls, airplanes, teddy bears and most everything.  Did you forget about the stool or did the chicken house take all the spare time?  I really would like for Daddy to make Bobby something sometime.  It would be so nice for him to have and to keep.

The church program sounds real nice.  I would like to be there.

Toni cut Bobby's hair this morning so I haven't done a thing but make the bed.

Evelyn and I entertain the Education Dept. Wives at a 1:00 luncheon on Thurs. and we dread it. Rosemary will be here to watch after Bobby so maybe it won't be too bad.

The party last Sat. night was the nicest affair we have ever attended at school.  The gym was decorated with snowmen and snow scenes and all the girls were so pretty in their formals.  The dinner before the party was also nice and the centerpiece was made of corsages which they gave to us to wear.  Wasn't that nice.

I must stop and get busy while Bobby sleeps.  Hope you are all fine."

                  Lots of love,

                         B, Bonnie & Bobby

NOTES from Ann:  As a child, Christmas in Richland was a magical time.  Both sets of grandparents and a family gathering at each home with aunts, uncles and cousins always made it special and meant two Christmases.  Small, simple cedar trees were cut in the woods and beautifully decorated.  The trip from Illinois seemed very long, but we looked forward to crossing the Chain of Rocks bridge and each of us being given a bag of Christmas candy by the bridge toll-taker.

The McCalls for December, 1949 featured Eleanor Roosevelt and the second part of her autobiography, This I Remember.  See her My Day Column for her comments:  http://www.gwu.edu/~erpapers/myday/displaydoc.cfm?_y=1949&_f=md001434

Tomorrow's post will be a fun look at the 40s in review, seen through the lens of B's camera and Time Magazine's 1949 Year in Review.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
