January 13, 1945 The Schoolwork, Teaching is Essential, The Extra Bean Pot, The State of the Union and Doughnuts

Dear Mother & Daddy,

"This school semester is almost gone so I've been busy finishing up my work and getting ready for next semester.  I plan to take only morning classes so the work oughtened to be too hard.  This morning I had to go to school and take some entrance examinations that should have been given to me last year when I first started back to school.  They aren't very important-- it's just a record for the college to have.   B is working in the library on his dissertation.  His first chapter was just fine and only a few words had to be changed.  We were real pleased about that.  He is trying his best to get it finished by March 1, because that is the deadline if he wants to graduate with the others.  If it isn't in by then he can go ahead and finish it but would not receive his diploma or the Ph.D. officially until next January.  We are not worried about the draft.  If they draft him into labor it wouldn't be bad at all.  He says he wouldn't mind working in a defense plant if they need him there but the teachers at Yale & Hopkins feel that teaching is essential so the board may think so too.  The papers say that 4Fs have been swarming to the war plants since the president's speech.

Today is awfully gloomy but not very cold.  We have had snow on the ground since before Christmas and keep getting a little more every few days.  It's awfully nasty and slushy.

Do the Perkin's plan to take Mrs. Deberry back to California with them?  Is she better now?

You don't need two bean pots.  You'd never eat that many beans.  If you want to give away or sell the one we sent you, we won't care a bit.  I wish I had some of your doughnuts.  I made two pumpkin pies yesterday and we had fried chicken for supper.  It isn't good like your chicken but is always tender.

There isn't any news and I have to go get something for dinner tomorrow so write soon."

                                       Lots of love,

                                                B & Bonnie

NOTE from Ann:  The "president's speech" was of course, the State of the Union Address, Jan. 6, 1945.

  1. Hi Ann
These are fantastic; it's taken me all week to read through the archives and catch up to this point. Can't wait to read more. Best wishes, Bev
